Bayern Munich's Champions League Performance Hampered By Fixture Congestion, Says Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany stated that Bayern Munich's busy schedule affected their performance against Celtic in the Champions League. Despite a late equaliser from Alphonso Davies, the team faced challenges due to fixture congestion.

Bayern Munich's hectic schedule was a factor in their Champions League performance against Celtic, according to Vincent Kompany. Alphonso Davies scored a last-minute goal to secure a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, ensuring Bayern's 3-2 aggregate victory. This result means Bayern have reached the Champions League last 16 for the 17th consecutive season.

Despite their success, Bayern were lucky not to concede more than once, as Nicholas Kuhn gave Celtic the lead in the 63rd minute. "We always talked about how many matches we have in six days," Kompany told reporters. "It is simple. The first half could have been better, the second half was good. We had chances and could have scored more goals."

Kompany: Fixture Congestion Affects Bayern's Play

Kompany emphasised the difficulty of maintaining top performance with such a demanding schedule. He stated, "It is not easy to get through such a programme. You have to see it in this context." Bayern aims for their performance and results to align, starting with Sunday's match.

Bayern currently holds an eight-point advantage over Leverkusen in the Bundesliga standings. They face Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, who are five points behind Leverkusen. Harry Kane might miss this match after being substituted at halftime due to a facial injury sustained against Leverkusen.

Kompany explained that Bayern's recent travel and matches required extra recovery time. "We were in Glasgow on Wednesday. Then Leverkusen," he said. "Big energy output. It is normal after the second game to take an extra day to recover." Kane's injury wasn't serious, but he felt unable to fully contribute during the game.

Late Equaliser Record

Bayern's equalising goal came at 93 minutes and 12 seconds, marking their latest equaliser in a Champions League match since Opta began recording data in the 2003-04 season. Kompany mentioned that Kane gave a thumbs up after the game but wasn't sure about his availability for future matches.

The team remains focused on aligning their performances with results as they continue their campaign across competitions.
