Xabi Alonso has downplayed his past success against Bayern Munich as Bayer Leverkusen prepares for their Champions League encounter. Under Alonso's leadership, Leverkusen has not lost to Bayern in six matches across all competitions, securing three wins and three draws. Despite this, Vincent Kompany's team holds an eight-point lead over Bayern in the Bundesliga standings.
Leverkusen's recent defensive record against Bayern is notable, with clean sheets in three of their last four meetings. This marks a significant improvement from their previous 15 encounters, where they conceded 42 goals without a single clean sheet. However, Alonso insists that past results are irrelevant for the upcoming match.

The upcoming clash will be the first time Bayern and Leverkusen face each other in a major European competition. Alonso is optimistic about achieving a better outcome than Leverkusen's last encounter with German opposition outside the Bundesliga. In the 2007-08 UEFA Cup, they were narrowly defeated by Hamburg.
Alonso acknowledges the challenge of facing a club like Bayern, which boasts six European Cups and is on track to win another Bundesliga title. "It's clear the situation," he stated. "We have a lot of respect for FC Bayern, for history and now also in this moment."
Alonso emphasised that each game is unique and preparation remains consistent regardless of past outcomes. "There is no secret," he told reporters. "The last game against Bayern means nothing to us for tomorrow; they bring us nothing." He stressed the importance of focusing on the immediate challenge ahead.
The first leg will take place in Munich, where Alonso anticipates a challenging and intense match. "We know it's the Champions League; it's a bit different from the Bundesliga," he remarked. The team aims to be competitive and deliver a strong performance both now and next week.
This season, Leverkusen has faced Bayern three times already, winning only once during their DFB-Pokal clash in December. Despite this mixed record, Alonso remains confident in his team's ability to compete at this level.
