Bayern Munich's Champions League journey began with a historic 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb, marking the first time a team scored nine goals in a single match in the competition. This win extended Bayern's streak of starting their Champions League campaigns with victories to 21 consecutive seasons, their last opening defeat being against Deportivo de La Coruna in 2002-03. Despite this impressive start, Vincent Kompany, debuting as head coach, remained grounded.
"It is about three points," Kompany stated. "Nine goals is a bit unusual but it was a lot of fun. The energy was good, the team showed the right spirit. We have played just one game and not more than that. It is now about the next game, to keep going."
Harry Kane was instrumental in Bayern's record-breaking performance at the Allianz Arena. Scoring four times against Dinamo Zagreb, Kane became the first player to achieve a hat-trick of penalties in a single Champions League match. His remarkable feat also made him the first Englishman since Alan Smith in 1991 to score four goals in one Champions League game.Kane's four-goal performance elevated his total to 33 Champions League goals, surpassing Wayne Rooney as the highest-scoring Englishman in the competition's history. This achievement followed his recent treble against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga, showcasing his excellent form early in the season."He is motivated and for me as a coach it is easier because if you have a top player who is himself so motivated it makes things so much easier," Kompany remarked about Kane’s leadership qualities.
