Bayern Munich Secures Vital Champions League Victory Over PSG, Says Vincent Kompany

Bayern Munich's recent 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain was a crucial moment in their Champions League journey, according to Vincent Kompany. Luis Diaz was instrumental, scoring twice before being dismissed for a reckless tackle on Achraf Hakimi. Despite Joao Neves' goal in the second half, PSG couldn't mount a comeback. Diaz made history as the first player to score twice and receive a red card in the first half of a Champions League match.

Bayern's numerical disadvantage forced them into a defensive stance, resulting in just 29% possession—their lowest recorded since 2003-04 in a single Champions League game. PSG managed 25 shots, marking the most Bayern has faced in a group stage match since October 2006 against Sporting CP. Kompany expressed pride in his team's defensive resilience, especially against the reigning champions.

Kompany emphasised the importance of Hakimi's swift recovery after the match. He noted the emotional and hard-fought nature of the game, highlighting teamwork as key to their success. "The most important thing is we hope that [Achraf] Hakimi recovers quickly," said Kompany after the win. "It was hard work and emotions today—those are the feelings we had after the game. In the end, we did it together."

Kompany acknowledged that while they hoped to maintain their first-half performance throughout, circumstances like Diaz's red card altered their approach. He stressed enjoying defensive play when necessary, crediting their training for their effective execution. "We obviously would’ve liked to have kept playing in the second half like we’d done in the first," he stated, "but you get games where things change through situations like the red card."

Bayern's victory extended their winning streak across all competitions to 16 matches. Their upcoming schedule includes a trip to Union Berlin and a Champions League clash with Arsenal, who have yet to concede this season.

Kompany reflected on how adapting their strategy was essential for securing three vital points despite challenges faced during the match. He remains aware that while this win is significant, it doesn't determine their fate in the Champions League yet.
