Bayern Munich Comeback Seals 3-2 Victory Over Freiburg As Karl Scores Late Winner

Bayern Munich stayed clear in the Bundesliga title race after a dramatic 3-2 comeback win at Freiburg, sealed by Lennart Karl’s 99th-minute goal. Vincent Kompany’s team recovered from 2-0 down, moved 12 points clear at the top, and gained momentum before facing Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The match at Europa-Park Stadion swung late in Bayern Munich’s favour after Tom Bischof scored twice from distance to drag the visitors level. Freiburg had led through Johan Manzambi and Lucas Holer, but defensive lapses and Bayern’s pressure told in stoppage time when Karl finished from close range.

Karl seals Bayern comeback win

Freiburg almost went ahead early when Philipp Treu met a low cutback from Niklas Beste, but the first-time effort flashed just wide of Manuel Neuer’s left post. That chance set the tone for an open contest, with Freiburg sharper in attack while Bayern Munich struggled to create clear openings.

Bayern Munich then threatened just before half-time despite a quiet attacking display. Lennart Karl broke through but shot straight at Noah Atubolu, wasting a rare one-on-one opportunity. The rebound fell to Bischof, who lifted a rushed effort over the bar when a composed finish might have punished Freiburg.

Freiburg finally took the lead only 39 seconds after the restart. Johan Manzambi cut inside and curled a precise shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving Neuer motionless. That strike rewarded Freiburg’s bright start to the second half and increased pressure on Bayern Munich, who still appeared flat and disjointed.

The hosts should have doubled the advantage on 54 minutes. Lucas Holer muscled past defenders into the penalty area but dragged a low shot wide of the far post. Freiburg did not have to wait long, though, as Holer pounced from a Beste corner, scoring via a deflection off Kim Min-Jae.

Bayern Munich statistics vs Freiburg highlight Olise influence

Bayern Munich needed inspiration and found it when Bischof struck from range, driving a shot into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-1. Deep into stoppage time, Bischof repeated the trick, this time using the weaker left foot to find the opposite corner and complete a personal brace.

There was still another twist as Joshua Kimmich released Alphonso Davies in the 99th minute. Davies sprinted down the flank and delivered a low cross that reached Karl, who tapped in from close range. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the travelling Bayern Munich supporters behind Atubolu’s goal.

The comeback meant Bayern Munich avoided a second Bundesliga defeat of the season, despite being two goals down in the 71st minute. Kompany’s side have now collected 22 points from losing positions in this league campaign, the highest figure for any Bundesliga team so far.

Michael Olise played a key role after coming on in the 56th minute for Bayern Munich. Olise set up Bischof’s second goal, which was Olise’s 18th league assist of the campaign. The French player also led the team for passes in the final third, with 28, and for crosses, with three.

Expected goals data underlined Bayern Munich’s pressure on Freiburg across the 90 minutes. Bayern recorded an xG of 2.8 from 21 attempts, while Freiburg produced 1.82 from 13 shots. The result strengthened Bayern’s control of the Bundesliga standings and added confidence before the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid.
