Bayern Munich Face Real Madrid In Champions League Quarter-Final Wary Of Wounded Opponent

Bayern Munich carry a narrow 2-1 lead into the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid at Allianz Arena, yet Manuel Neuer warns that Alvaro Arbeloa's side, hurt from the first match, remain a serious threat despite Bayern holding what appears a strong position.

The Bundesliga leaders claimed victory at Estadio Bernabeu through goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane, before Kylian Mbappe struck a 74th-minute reply. That late effort kept the tie open and ensured Real Madrid travel to Germany knowing a single-goal win could still change everything.

Bayern Munich wary of wounded Real Madrid

Data from Opta's supercomputer places Bayern Munich as clear favourites to progress past Real Madrid, giving Vincent Kompany's team an 83% likelihood of reaching the semi-finals. In the tournament projections, only Arsenal, rated at 34% to lift the trophy, sit above Bayern, who hold a 30% chance.

Bayern's win in Madrid was the 23rd time they have taken an away first leg in a European Cup or Champions League knockout tie. Across the previous 22 occasions, Bayern fell out only once, losing on away goals to Inter in the 2010-11 round of 16 after a 3-2 home defeat.

Team / Metric Detail
Bayern away first-leg wins 23 in European Cup/Champions League knockouts
Eliminations after such wins 1 (vs Inter, 2010-11, 1-0 away, 2-3 home)
Opta semi-final qualification chance Bayern 83% vs Real Madrid 17%
Opta title chances Arsenal 34%, Bayern 30%

Real Madrid's record in Munich, however, suggests the second leg could be tense. Since 2013-14, Real Madrid have three away victories against Bayern across all competitions from only four visits, the joint-most alongside Borussia Dortmund's three in 17 and Borussia Monchengladbach's three in 13 matches.

Los Blancos are unbeaten in their last four games away to Munich, with three wins and one draw. Across the entire Bundesliga era, only Werder Bremen, between 1989-1992 and 2007-2010, and Koln, between 2003-2010, have previously managed five consecutive away fixtures there without defeat.

"It's a great opportunity for Real to make good. But we know what that's like, too, from when we didn't win the title," Neuer told reporters. "It's tough and difficult, especially for a club like Real Madrid. We've experienced that firsthand. It's precisely when your back is against the wall that you can move mountains, but I don't want to put myself too much in Real's shoes.I'd rather focus on our own situation. We're on a roll, things are going well, we're still in the running in every competition, and our fate is in our own hands. This is a situation where we're in the driver's seat."

Neuer's comments arrive as Real Madrid chase what may be their final realistic trophy of the season. Arbeloa's team sit nine points behind Barcelona in LaLiga, have already exited the Copa del Rey, and lost the Supercopa de Espana final, which increases the pressure surrounding this European quarter-final.

Neuer stressed that Bayern must respect a wounded opponent at Allianz Arena, even while enjoying momentum under Kompany. Bayern are competing on every front and, in Neuer's view, carry confidence that their destiny in this tie, and the season more broadly, rests with their own performances rather than external factors.

Neuer, a two-time Champions League winner with Bayern, including the 2019-20 success, believes this squad holds similar potential. Bayern's recent run, reinforced by the Club World Cup and domestic Supercup performances, has shaped a belief that the group understands Kompany's approach and can handle the demands of the knockout phase.

"We know that a lot is possible, especially with the energy in us. I'd be happy if we got there again. We laid the foundation with the Club World Cup," Neuer added. "That was an important element which we took into the Supercup, then we started very well and that creates something. It's the second year under Vinny Kompany, we've made progressit helps when we understand the coach's philosophy, the energy is in the team and I think it's our time."

The quarter-final now balances Bayern's strong numbers against Real Madrid's history of away success in Munich. With Allianz Arena hosting a decisive leg and both teams carrying clear motivations, the match shapes into a contest where statistics favour Bayern, yet Real Madrid's resilience remains a central factor.
