Bayern Munich's Vincent Kompany Struggles To Understand New Champions League Format After PSG Win

Vincent Kompany voiced his confusion regarding the new Champions League format after Bayern Munich's victory over Paris Saint-Germain. The win improved Bayern's chances of progressing in the tournament as they aim for a top-eight finish.

Vincent Kompany expressed his confusion regarding the new Champions League format after Bayern Munich's narrow 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain. This win, secured by Kim Min-jae's first-half goal, enhanced Bayern's chances of advancing. PSG faced a setback when Ousmane Dembele received a red card for two yellow cards early in the second half. This result marked Bayern's third win in five matches under the new system.

Kompany admitted during a press conference that he doesn't fully grasp the current standings. "I don’t look at the table because, honestly, I don’t yet understand it," he said. However, he remains optimistic about their prospects if they continue winning. Bayern currently sits 11th in the 36-team table with nine points, just one point shy of the top eight, which ensures automatic qualification for the last 16.

Kompany Confused by Champions League Format

Bayern's performance against PSG was commendable, with Kompany praising their first-half pressing and discipline. He acknowledged that they could have scored more but was satisfied with the outcome. "We are on the right track but working to become even better," he stated. The team aims to secure a spot among the top eight by winning their remaining matches.

Bayern Munich has now defeated PSG eight times in Champions League history. Only Real Madrid and Bayern themselves have more wins against a single opponent in this tournament. Additionally, Bayern is unbeaten in their last 33 home games during the group stage, matching Barcelona's record from November 2009 to November 2020.

Their next opportunity to break this record will come when they host Slovan Bratislava on matchday eight. Before that, they will travel to face Shakhtar Donetsk and Feyenoord. This impressive home record underscores Bayern's dominance in recent years.

The Bundesliga leaders' recent form is noteworthy as well. They have achieved seven consecutive victories without conceding a goal, a feat last accomplished under Jupp Heynckes in 2011 when they went ten matches without letting in any goals.

As Bayern continues its campaign, maintaining this momentum will be crucial for securing advancement under the new format. Their strong defensive performances and consistent wins highlight their potential to achieve further success this season.
