Bayern Munich: Gnabry Sees Parallels Between The 2025-26 Squad And The 2020 Treble Winners

Serge Gnabry draws parallels between Bayern Munich's 2025-26 side and the 2020 treble-winning team, citing strong atmosphere and belief as signs of potential success. With leaders in goal and attack, Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga and progress in European and domestic cups, suggesting a similar path to glory is possible this season.

Serge Gnabry believes Bayern Munich are capable of winning another treble this season, and sees strong echoes of the 2019-20 campaign. Bayern are again chasing trophies on three fronts, and Gnabry feels the current squad has rediscovered a similar mood and shared confidence that helped secure the club’s last treble under Hansi Flick.

Bayern currently sit 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, are in the Champions League last 16 and the DFB-Pokal semi-finals. This strong position across all competitions has encouraged comparisons inside the squad. Gnabry explained that results have improved the mood and strengthened a sense of collective purpose in recent weeks.

Gnabry links 2025-26 to 2020 treble

In an interview with the club magazine, 51, Gnabry detailed why the present group reminds Gnabry of that 2020 side. I see parallels to the treble-winning team of 2020even if it is still early for big statements, said Gnabry. But for me, the atmosphere in the team is currently the best since then. Victories always help, the belief in something bigger arises almost automatically.

The forward played a major role during the 2019-20 treble run. Gnabry made 46 appearances that season and directly contributed to 36 goals, scoring 23 and supplying 13 assists. In the Champions League that year, Gnabry scored nine times and added two assists in 10 games, as Bayern lifted the trophy in the COVID-hit season.

A major element of both campaigns is a dominant central striker. In 2019-20, Robert Lewandowski finished with 55 goals in 47 appearances. This season Harry Kane has taken a similar role for Vincent Kompany’s team, scoring 45 goals in 37 matches, including 30 in the Bundesliga. Lewandowski still holds the single-season league record with 41 goals.

Those numbers underline the importance of Bayern’s main forwards across both seasons.

Despite that scoring form, Kane remains cautious about the title race and the wider treble discussion. The more I play with them, the better I understand my team-mates, added Kane. The players understand each other and the processes better, feel more comfortable in their positions and movements. We had an 11-point lead a few weeks ago and we saw how quickly it can change within two results.

For now, Bayern control all three competitions and key players are performing at high levels. Gnabry’s memories of 2020, combined with Kane’s goal return and measured outlook, reflect a squad that is confident yet cautious, aware trophies are possible but also that the situation can still shift quickly.
