Bayern Munich Edge Dortmund In Der Klassiker As Kimmich Nets Late Winner

Bayern Munich secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker, with Joshua Kimmich scoring a late volley to seal the win after Harry Kane's two goals. Kane's brace kept Bayern atop the table, while Dortmund fought back, but Kimmich's late strike delivered a pivotal result in the Bundesliga title race.

Bayern Munich tightened control of the Bundesliga race with a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker, decided by Joshua Kimmich’s 87th-minute strike. The win moved Vincent Kompany’s team 11 points clear at the top and also ended a 16-match unbeaten league sequence for Niko Kovac’s Dortmund.

Harry Kane again proved decisive, hitting two second-half goals in 16 minutes to turn the match after Dortmund’s first-half opener. Kane reached 30 Bundesliga goals for the season, at least 17 more than any other player in the division, underlining Bayern Munich’s attacking edge against their closest rivals.

Kane’s impact also entered Bundesliga history. The striker has now scored multiple goals in four consecutive league matches. That run equals the joint Bundesliga record, previously managed only by Borussia Dortmund’s Lothar Emmerich in 1967 and Wolfsburg’s Tomislav Maric in 2001, placing Kane alongside two notable names from past seasons.

Overall data supported Bayern Munich’s success against Borussia Dortmund. Kompany’s side produced 14 shots for an expected goals total of 2.05, while Dortmund generated 10 attempts worth 1.04 xG. Despite the defeat, Dortmund extended an attacking sequence, having now scored in each of their first 24 Bundesliga matches of a season for the first time.

Set-pieces continued to be crucial for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga campaign. In 2026, Dortmund have netted 12 of their 24 league goals from dead-ball situations, the best such return in the top flight. That strength showed again in Der Klassiker, with the opening goal coming from a well-delivered free-kick.

Bayern Munich started the contest strongly in an open, end-to-end first half. Michael Olise forced Gregor Kobel into an early save with a curling effort from inside the box. Yet Borussia Dortmund struck first in the 26th minute, taking advantage after earlier controversy involving Nico Schlotterbeck.

Six minutes before the opener, Schlotterbeck escaped a possible red card after a reckless challenge on Josip Stanisic was reviewed by VAR. Soon after, Daniel Svensson whipped in a teasing free-kick, and Schlotterbeck glanced the delivery into the net, giving Dortmund the lead despite Bayern Munich’s positive start.

Bayern Munich answered nine minutes after the interval. Serge Gnabry rose well and headed the ball across goal, unselfishly setting up Kane. The forward guided a precise low finish into the bottom corner. With 20 minutes remaining, Schlotterbeck tripped Stanisic in the area, and Kane calmly converted the penalty, despite Kobel’s strong attempt to save.

The match swung again on 83 minutes as Borussia Dortmund levelled. Marcel Sabitzer supplied an accurate cross from the left, which Svensson met with a powerful volley to make it 2-2. However, another twist followed when Jobe Bellingham’s late clearance fell to Kimmich, who drove a volley into the net on 87 minutes.

Bayern Munich then managed the final five minutes of additional time to close out Der Klassiker. The victory, combined with Kane’s scoring record and Kimmich’s winning goal, underlined the champions’ current advantage in the Bundesliga standings, while Dortmund’s strong attacking numbers and set-piece threat remained clear despite the setback.
