Vincent Kompany expressed disappointment over Bayern Munich's missed opportunities following their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa. Jhon Duran's impressive goal at Villa Park secured the win for the hosts in Wednesday's Champions League match. This was only the second encounter between Villa and Bayern, with the first being the 1982 European Cup final, which Villa also won 1-0.
Despite Bayern's efforts, they failed to capitalise on their chances. They managed 17 shots, with seven on target, and an expected goals (xG) of 1.42. Emiliano Martinez made several crucial saves for Villa late in the game. "We missed some big chances and they scored the chance," Kompany remarked after his first loss as Bayern's head coach.

Aston Villa became only the second English team to win their first two Champions League games since 1992-93, following Leicester City in 2016-17. Meanwhile, Bayern's remarkable 41-game unbeaten streak in UEFA's group/league stage came to an end. Kompany acknowledged Villa's strength, stating, "When we have the ball, we're dangerous, but [Villa] are a strong team."
Kompany noted that despite not scoring from significant opportunities, Bayern performed well overall. He emphasised learning from this experience and recognised Villa's special night. "We gave away a moment and in that moment obviously Villa scored a goal," he added.
Looking ahead, Kompany remains optimistic about Bayern's potential success if they focus on their strengths. "If we focus on our own work, we will win a lot of games still," he stated confidently. Bayern will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The match highlighted both teams' capabilities and underscored the importance of seizing opportunities in high-stakes competitions like the Champions League. As Bayern regroups for their upcoming fixtures, they aim to build on their strengths and address areas needing improvement.
