Bengaluru FC, who finished the runners-up in ISL 2022-23 season last month, were held for a 1-1 draw by Sreenidi Deccan in the opening group encounter. Kerala Blasters made the most out of the result as they defeated RoundGlass 3-1 in their game.
Victor shoots with his left foot! Another nice build up there as Jerry collected a throw on the left flank and quickly laid it off to Mauricio, who took a turn and set up Victor for the shot but the ball rolled to the goalkeeper with not enough power behind it.
Kerala Blasters are still in the fray as they are third in the group and are just a point behind the two toppers. The referee blows the halftime whistle as the players catch a breather. It was an even first half with not many clear-cut chances created. RoundGlass were happy to shoot from far while Bengaluru had the best chances of the game towards the end of the half and they squandered it.
HOW COULD THEY MISS THAT! Bengaluru forward Shivashakti pressed and the ball away from defender Hmingthanmawia and was alone in front of the keeper, who was alert enough to block the shot. RoundGlass Punjab win back-to-back corners after Juna Mera takes his chances from 25 yards. The resulting corners were well dealt with by the tall Bengaluru defenders.
However, the Kochi side was defeated 2-0 by Sreenidi Deccan earlier today as goals from Rilwan Hassan and David Castaneda took the I-League runners up top of the table with four points. KBFC are down to the second spot now with three points and could very well lose it if Bengaluru bag all three points and may go top of the table if they win by a three-goal margin.
Doing so won't be easy against RoundGlass, who might have leaked three goals in the first game but were the best defence in the second division. During their title-winning campaign, the side from Panchkula kept 11 clean sheets.
However, the quality of an attacking trio in Sunil Chhetri, Roy Krishna and Javi Hernandez could be too much to handle for the side, who are the lone northern outfit in the group dominated by three southern sides.
RoundGlass Punjab's Greek coach Staikos Vergetis will be hoping that Luka Majcen (16 goals) and Juan Mera (10) will maintain their form from the I-League season at the Cup tournament as well. Bengaluru FC coach Simon Grayson, on the other hand, will like to ensure his team doesn't go into a shell after a hard-fought game against a second-division but quality team.
