Belgian PM offers beer bet to Barack Obama over Belgium-USA World Cup game

Salvador, June 27: Belgium's Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo is so confident of his team's victory over USA in the Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup 2014 that he has challenged American President Barack Obama to a bet of "great Belgian beers".

The group stage of World Cup 2014 concluded yesterday (June 26) and Belgium topped Group H. USA, in Group G, finished second after toppers Germany. Yesterday, Belgium defeated South Korea 1-0 while USA lost to Germany 0-1 but still progressed.

Now, on July 1, Belgium will face USA in the knockout stage in Salvador.

Ahead of this match, Belgian PM Elio Di Rupo challenged Obama via Twitter. He wrote, if USA wins he would offer "some great Belgian beers" to Obama.

"Hey @BarackObama, I am betting some great Belgian beers that our @BelRedDevils will make it to the quarter final! :-) #ComeOnBelgium #BEL," Di Rupo tweeted today.

The message was retweeted over 1,800 times (at 3.30 PM IST) and 887 people favourited it. The PM has over 119 thousand followers on Twitter.

Obama is yet to respond to this challenge. The President watched the USA-Germany game on TV aboard Air Force One yesterday.

Belgium are ranked 11th in the world while USA are 13th. On current form, Belgium are favourites to beat America. They finished group stage unbeaten, winning all three matches.
