Amadou Onana World Cup ACL Injury Ends Belgium's Tournament
Belgium will head into a World Cup quarter-final against Spain without Amadou Onana, after the midfielder suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury that is expected to rule the Aston Villa player out for several months and remove an experienced option from the national team squad at a crucial stage of the tournament.
Onana’s setback came during Belgium’s 4-1 victory over the United States in the last-16 at Seattle Stadium, where the 24-year-old was forced off in the 21st minute following a challenge with Christian Pulisic, ending a World Cup campaign in which the midfielder had started two of four appearances for Belgium.

Medical tests later confirmed a ruptured ACL, and reports indicate Onana could spend up to eight months out, creating a long absence that will affect both Aston Villa and Belgium, who are now preparing for a quarter-final against European champions Spain without a key midfield option trusted on the biggest stage.
Team doctor Brahim Hacene outlined the situation in a formal update, stating: "Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. This is devastating news, both for him personally and for the team. We immediately consulted with Amadou and with Aston Villa to agree on the best approach to his recovery. Over the coming days, we will jointly determine the next steps in his medical treatment and rehabilitation. Throughout this process, we will continue to provide Amadou with our full support."
Belgium reached the last eight of the World Cup for the first time since finishing third in Russia eight years ago, but the side must continue that pursuit of another deep run without Onana, whose tournament is over even if the team progresses beyond the quarter-final stage against Luis de la Fuente’s Spain.
Belgium have a mixed record in World Cup quarter-finals, advancing twice from three attempts, with penalty shootout success against Spain in 1986 and a 2-1 victory over Brazil in 2018, while the only defeat at this stage came in 2014, when Argentina claimed a 1-0 win to halt Belgian hopes.
{TABLE_1}The upcoming meeting with Spain will be the third World Cup clash between the nations and the second at the quarter-final phase, with Belgium having advanced 40 years ago, and the winner of this latest tie will face either France or Morocco on 19 July in the showpiece final, adding further weight to Onana’s enforced absence at this critical point.
Belgium now continue their World Cup campaign with public support for Amadou Onana clear from within the camp, yet the focus must also shift quickly to planning for Spain without the midfielder, managing the loss in both tactical and emotional terms while Onana begins a long rehabilitation process agreed between the national medical staff and Aston Villa.
