Bayer Leverkusen Clinches First Champions League Victory With 1-0 Win Over Benfica

Bayer Leverkusen secured their first Champions League win of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Benfica, thanks to Patrik Schick's decisive header in the second half. The match at Estadio da Luz was closely contested, but Schick's goal ensured Leverkusen bounced back from their previous 7-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Benfica started the game strongly, with Dodi Lukebakio hitting the post just 11 minutes in. The Belgian forward continued to threaten but was unable to beat Mark Flekken, who made several comfortable saves. Nicolas Otamendi also came close for Benfica with a header that hit the crossbar.

Vangelis Pavlidis had a chance for Leverkusen before halftime, but his shot was deflected over by Loic Bade. After the break, Schick entered as a substitute in the 57th minute and scored eight minutes later. His initial shot was saved by Anatoliy Trubin, but Arthur's persistence allowed Schick to head the ball over the goalkeeper.

Despite Lukebakio's efforts to equalise for Benfica, his attempts were easily handled by Flekken. This win was crucial for Leverkusen as they ended a three-match winless streak against Portuguese teams, marking their first victory since defeating Sporting CP in October 1997.

Benfica and manager Jose Mourinho were left frustrated after dominating with 21 shots compared to Leverkusen's seven. They recorded an expected goals (xG) of 1.42 but failed to convert their chances into goals. This loss extended Benfica's losing streak in Europe's top competition to six matches.

In 2025, this marks only the third year where Benfica has lost six or more times in European competitions, following similar records in 2017 and 2008. Despite their efforts, they remain without a Champions League win this season.

Kasper Hjulmand has adapted well to Bundesliga life with Leverkusen, but Champions League victories have been elusive until now. This win against Benfica is significant as it breaks their long-standing drought against Portuguese opposition in European competitions.
