Benfica Coach Bruno Lage Responds To Adi Hutter After Champions League Victory Over Monaco
Benfica's coach, Bruno Lage, responded to comments from Monaco's Adi Hutter after their Champions League clash. Hutter implied Benfica's 4-3 aggregate victory was due to luck. Benfica had a 1-0 lead from the first leg and secured a 3-3 draw in the second leg at Estadio da Luz, with Orkun Kokcu scoring late to equalise.
Monaco's manager criticised referee Glenn Nyberg for awarding a penalty to Benfica when Monaco led 2-1. This decision played a crucial role in the match's outcome. Despite this, Benfica advanced to the last 16 for the third time in four seasons, missing out only in 2023-24.

Lage addressed these criticisms during his post-match press conference. He remarked, "It has been my fate, when I win, I'm always lucky." He noted that complaints often arise about referees or luck whenever he faces Hutter. He recalled an earlier match where a referee error went against them but received less attention than recent events.
The current Champions League season has seen Benfica involved in high-scoring matches. Across ten games, there have been 36 goals scored (21 by Benfica and 15 against), averaging 3.6 goals per game. Only in the 2022-23 season did they see more goals per match, with an average of 3.9.
Lage expressed satisfaction with their performance and progression in the tournament. "It was another great football game," he said. "We are happy for that, for going through the tie against a good opponent." He acknowledged Monaco's strong moments, particularly after their initial goal.
Benfica's journey continues as they prepare for tougher challenges ahead in the Champions League. Their ability to score and defend effectively will be crucial as they aim to progress further in this prestigious competition.
