Benfica Triumphs Over Juventus 2-0 To Secure Champions League Play-Off Spot

Vangelis Pavlidis played a crucial role in Benfica's 2-0 victory over Juventus, securing their spot in the Champions League play-offs. Pavlidis scored once and assisted another goal, helping his team surpass Juventus in the standings. Despite Juventus being assured of a top-24 finish before the match, they struggled to contain Benfica, who were determined to win.

Benfica began the match with intensity, taking only 16 minutes for Pavlidis to score with a composed finish. They almost doubled their lead just before halftime, but Mattia Perin made an impressive save against the Greek striker. Juventus tried to equalise in the second half but failed to create significant threats, as Anatolli Trubin confidently stopped attempts from Khephren Thuram and Douglas Luiz.

Benfica Beats Juventus to Reach Play-Offs

In the closing stages, Benfica sealed their victory with Orkun Kokcu scoring a low shot into the bottom-left corner. Kerem Akturkoglu had an opportunity to extend the lead further but missed his chance. This win allowed Benfica to climb to 16th place with 13 points, moving one point and four places ahead of Juventus.

Pavlidis made headlines previously when he scored a hat-trick in Benfica's 5-4 loss to Barcelona, becoming one of only five players in Champions League history to do so on a losing side. This time, he achieved a happier milestone by becoming just the second Greek player to score five goals in a European Cup campaign since Antonis Antoniadis for Panathinaikos in 1970-71.

Benfica have now won three out of four away matches in this season's Champions League (L1), matching their best away performance from the 2022-23 campaign. Although Juventus ended this stage on a disappointing note, they have advanced from nine of their last ten group phases, missing out only once in 2022-23.
