Bengaluru, December 20: Indian Super League clubs Bengaluru FC and Chennaiyin FC pledged for fans' safety in the wake of a video that was circulated in social media of a policeman lathi-charging a travelling Chennaiyin FC supporter at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium after their ISL match last Sunday (December 17).

Minutes the match, Dhanpal Ganesh, who scored the winner for Chennaiyin FC in their 2-1 win, was seen acknowledging the fans at the East Block stand. As Dhanpal approached the stand, a fan went up to the grills to catch a closer glimpse of the Chennaiyin FC midfielder. A policeman is seen in the video assaulting the fan, forcing him to get down the grill.

Following the incident, both clubs issued a joint statement. "An incident involving a policeman and a fan from Chennaiyin dented that (engaging) experience for all of us," the statement reads. "Your safety, when you come to the stadium to watch your team play, is our responsibility. Both BFC and Chennaiyin FC are coming together to take a pledge in making every effort to ensure that safety of our fans is never compromised upon and your experience is always the best. We have been in touch with the concerned authorities see that something like this is dealt with differently and more appropriately."

Earlier in November, a NorthEast United FC fan claimed she was harassed at Chennaiyin FC's home ground, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Two men - Vijay alias Tamil Selvan and Karthik Kumar - were arrested in connection with the incident.

Even back then, Chennaiyin FC and NEUFC condemned the incident and called for better fan behaviour.
