Bengaluru FC suspend player salaries amid ISL conundrum, urge AIFF and FSDL to 'end this impasse'

By MyKhel Staff

In the heart of Bengaluru, where the roar of the crowd once echoed through the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, a shadow has fallen over Bengaluru FC. The club, a beacon of Indian football, released a sombre statement on Monday (August 4).

Amid the current uncertainty of Indian Super League due to the ongoing issue between FSDL and AIFF, the club announced that they will be ceasing to pay salaries to the players and the staff.

Bengaluru FC suspend player salaries amid ISL conundrum urge AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse

"In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of the players and staff belonging to the first team," a statement from Bengaluru FC read on social media.

This declaration, born from the ongoing stalemate between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) over the Master Rights Agreement, has plunged the club and its players into uncertainty.

The StoryThe streets of Bengaluru buzzed with disbelief as news spread that Bengaluru FC had halted player salaries amid the ISL conundrum. Among those now unpaid was India's football legend, Sunil Chhetri, whose iconic goals had once lifted the club to glory in the 2018-19 ISL title.

The crisis stemmed from the impending expiration of the Master Rights Agreement, with FSDL and AIFF locked in a standoff. The AIFF's rejected proposal for a 10-year sanction with higher fees clashed with FSDL's demand for a sustainable model, leaving clubs like Bengaluru FC in financial limbo. Over Rs 5,000 crores invested by ISL franchises had yielded no returns, a stark reminder of mismanagement.

Yet, the lethargy of these governing bodies, criticized for prioritizing negotiations over player welfare, only deepened the wound. Former captain Bhaichung Bhutia had warned of such a collapse, and now, the league's decade-long promise to elevate Indian football lay in tatters.

Amid the turmoil, Bengaluru FC vowed to nurture its youth programs, a flicker of hope in a season shrouded in doubt.

"The Club remains committed to growing and developing the sport and our operations with our youth teams - men and women, and BFC Soccer Schools remain unaffected. We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the statement concluded.

For the India icon Sunil Chhetri and his teammates, the wait for resolution and their next paycheck, continues.
