
London, March 4: Benjamin Mendy has accused his own club, Manchester City of misquoting him over his comeback. The defender has distanced himself from his own club's announcement after City's twitter handle claimed that he is eying a return against Manchester United.
The left-back arrived from Monaco last summer in a whopping £49million deal however appeared only in five matches before getting injured in September's clash against Crystal Palace which ruled him out for five months.
The Frenchman was hoped to be back initially around the time of the Champions League semifinals in late April however on Friday, City's twitter quoted him as saying he has a 'realistic aim' of making a return in the team this month only when City host United.
The former Monaco defender had been quoted on the club's website as saying: "The Manchester derby is a realistic aim. That's half-clear in my mind. I really want to play that game. When I started my recovery, I had in mind the semifinals of the Champions League. That was my goal, but I am coming back a bit quicker than expected originally so maybe it will be possible for me to return sooner than that. I believe in this.
"I think it's possible for me to come back within four weeks. It's not a good thing to come back too soon and you have to take your time. We will see how things go but I am working hard and optimistic."
But the 23-year-old immediately squashed the rumour of him returning to football such advanced just after City's declaration as the former Monaco defender blamed his team for misrepresenting him regarding the matter.
He took to Twitter to dismiss City's post and said: "Hmmm not sure where or when I said that but...calm down guys, no rush or pressure it will take as long as I need until I'm 100%."
In Mendy's absence, Pep Guardiola has frequently used makeshift players in his position as Danilo, Delph and youngster Zinchenko all have been deployed in the left fullback spot.
However, with World Cup around the corner and City doing wonders in the field, the Frenchman will be now hoping to fasten his return to action before the end of the season to play a part and end the season on a high note so that he can challenge his place in France's World Cup team again.
