Real Betis experienced heartbreak after a second-half collapse led to a 4-1 defeat against Chelsea in the Europa League final. Manuel Pellegrini, Betis' manager, expressed that his players were devastated by the loss. Despite an impressive first half where they led through Abde Ezzalzouli's early goal, injuries and Chelsea's resurgence turned the tide.
Betis started strong, with Isco setting up Ezzalzouli for a ninth-minute opener. This goal was notable as it was the earliest in a major European final since Romelu Lukaku's strike in 2019-20. However, Chelsea improved significantly after halftime, with Cole Palmer assisting Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson to overturn the scoreline.

Pellegrini reflected on the match, acknowledging that injuries affected their performance. "We were causing them problems through Abde, but he sprained his ankle," he said. The team struggled to maintain their first-half momentum, allowing Chelsea to dominate and secure victory with goals from Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo.
Despite the setback, Pellegrini remains optimistic about Betis' progress this season. He highlighted their qualification for Europe and reaching a final as significant achievements. "A season in which we qualified for Europe and reached a final is a step forward," he stated, expressing confidence that fans share this sentiment.
The defeat marked Betis' first major European final appearance, making them the 12th Spanish club to reach such a stage. Historically, Spanish clubs have excelled in finals, winning 27 of the last 27 involving them across various competitions. Unfortunately, Betis couldn't extend this streak to 28 victories.
Isco, who shone in the first half but faded after halftime, shared his thoughts on the game. He admitted that Betis failed to capitalise on their lead at halftime. "I think we took refuge in the scoreboard a bit," Isco remarked. He acknowledged Chelsea's quality and power as factors contributing to their defeat.
Reflecting on their performance, Isco noted that mistakes are costly in European finals. "In a European final, mistakes are very punishing," he said. Despite dominating early on with limited chances for Chelsea, Betis couldn't maintain their advantage and suffered a heavy loss.
Pellegrini emphasised that while they couldn't secure this title, preparations for next season would begin immediately. "We have had a really good season - unfortunately we couldn’t win this title," he mentioned. The focus now shifts to building on this year's accomplishments for future success.
Betis will compete at a higher level of continental competition next term in the Europa League. Their journey continues as they aim to improve upon their record against English sides, having only won once against them previously in nine attempts.
