Beyond The Pitch: Norway's ‘Viking Kitchen' Serves A Unique Gastronomical World Cup Experience

Norway last made a World Cup appearance back in 1998 when the team achieved their best-ever finish in the World Cup, reaching the Round of 16, eventually going out of the tournament against the eventual runners-up, Brazil. However, this time around, the Scandinavian footballing giants, who have seen a resurgence in world football, are leaving no stones unturned to acclimatise their players to such a foreign environment so that their team can go one step further.

One important aspect of this has been to ensure that the Norwegian team's gastronomy is kept in check. It plays a vital role in maintaining a player's overall health and well-being, while also fuelling them during long practice days and helping them recover from strenuous workouts.

Keeping this in the back of their mind, when the Norwegian team arrived in the United States for the World Cup, they didn't just bring their players, who had already gone viral for their Viking-themed team photos. They also travelled with their own chefs and a month's supply of food, fully prepared for the tournament.

300 kg Of Atlantic Salmon!

Reports suggest Norway's team has gone to great lengths to maintain their diet during the World Cup, transporting around 300 kg of Atlantic salmon and white fish, 116 kg of brunost, the country's signature caramelised brown cheese. Additionally, nearly 6,000 oranges to their Greensboro, North Carolina base.

According to TasteAtlas, a team of three specialist chefs will prepare four meals daily for a travelling group of over 60 people, focusing on light, familiar dishes the players are used to. Leading the effort is Aron Espeland, who has worked with the national side for 35 years, with expectations that the squad will consume the entire fish supply over the course of the tournament.

Norway's climate contrasts sharply with the conditions in the southeastern United States, where the team is currently based. The intense summer heat and humidity are a stark shift from the cooler environments of cities like Bergen and Tromsø. Players have already been seen adjusting, even lying on the pitch to absorb the unfamiliar warmth.

In such surroundings, access to familiar food becomes especially valuable. Sudden dietary changes during overseas tournaments are often underestimated but can affect digestion, sleep patterns and overall focus. Maintaining a consistent diet is therefore a deliberate choice, as crucial to performance as any tactical preparation on the field.
