The much-anticipated 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is set to kick off on June 15 in the United States, with the opening clash featuring Lionel Messi's Inter Miami facing off against African giants Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium.
This edition marks a new era for the competition, which has now expanded to a 32-team format with group stages followed by knockouts.

Inter Miami will be without two key players for their opening game-veteran left-back Jordi Alba and young defensive midfielder Yannick Bright. Head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed their absence during a pre-match press conference. "Jordi and Yannick won't be part of the squad for this one, but we're optimistic about their availability for the second match," said the Argentine tactician.
The 41-year-old expressed disappointment over the injuries but remained optimistic about his team's chances. "It would have been ideal to have the full squad at our disposal. That would give us more depth and flexibility," Mascherano admitted.
He also praised FIFA for transforming the Club World Cup into a larger, more global competition. "This tournament is special. We earned our spot with last season's performance, and it gives us a platform to measure ourselves against the best," he said. Mascherano emphasized that his team's focus remains on what they can control, trusting FIFA's preparations to ensure optimal playing conditions.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also addressed concerns around safety, noting that enhanced security measures have been put in place to ensure a safe and smooth tournament experience.
On the other side, Al Ahly manager Jose Riveiro acknowledged the challenge posed by Inter Miami's attacking trio-especially Lionel Messi. "He still reads the game exceptionally well. In the attacking third, he's lethal and his chemistry with Busquets and Suarez makes him even more dangerous," Riveiro commented.
He stressed the importance of disrupting Miami's rhythm. "The key is to prevent quality service to those forwards. We'll have to be sharp and force them into uncomfortable situations," said the Spanish coach, as his side prepares for the tournament's curtain-raiser.
