Belo Horizonte (Brazil), July 8: Germany toyed with hosts Brazil to hand them a crushing 7-1 defeat in the first semi-final of the 2014 Fifa World Cup here on Tuesday. The Germans entered the World Cup final for the eighth time after scoring the most number of goals in a World Cup semi-final.

The 7-1 defeat was the worst-ever defeat for the South American team since 1920 when they lost 0-6 to Uruguay. It was also the second time that Brazil conceded five or more goals in a World Cup match. The last time it occurred was way back in 1938 when Brazil beat Poland 6-5.

Hungary thrashed El Salvador 10-1 in 1982

Laszlo Kiss scored a hat-trick, Laszlo Fazekas scored twice while Tibor Nyilasi, Gabor Poloskei, Jozsef Toth and Lazar Szentes netted one each in this match. Amazingly, Hungary didn't progress from the group stage. Ramirez scored for El Salvador. The funny part is that Hungary yet could not make it to the next stage from the group.

Yugoslavia hammered Zaire 9-0 in 1974

Dusan Bajevic scored a hat-trick against a hapless Zaire. Even the reigning champions Brazil could net only three against them.

Hungary annihilated South Korea 9-0 in 1954

Ferenc Puskas struck twice while Sandor Kocsis scored a hat-trick to floor the Asians in their first-ever World Cup match.

Uruguay destroyed Bolivia 8-0 in 1950

Oscar Miguez completed a hat-trick against their South American neighbours as Uruguay rushed through for their second World Cup title.

Most of the biggest defeats came against minnows except the one on Tuesday

Sweden drubbed Cuba 8-0 in 1938

It was Cuba's only World Cup and after reaching the quarter-finals, they were handed the biggest-ever defeat in the knock-out stages of the World Cup by the Swedish.

Germany trounced Saudi Arabia 8-0 in 2002

It was Germany's biggest-ever World Cup victory. Miroslav Klose scored a hat-trick in this win.

While the above victories were accomplished mainly against lesser teams, the latest scoreline in the World cup was from a match played between two superpowers in world football. The scoreline suggested something went really, really bad for the Brazilians.
