Blackburn Rovers secured a 3-0 win against Portsmouth, boosting them to fifth place and back into the play-off spots. Portsmouth slipped to second-bottom due to goal difference but remain just one point behind Cardiff City, who are just above the relegation zone. The match was goalless at halftime before Blackburn broke through in the second half.
Manager John Eustace expressed satisfaction with the victory, acknowledging Portsmouth's challenging play. "The aim is always to win the game, and it was a difficult one tonight," he stated. Eustace made strategic substitutions, bringing on Makhtar Gueye and Amario Crozier-Duberry ten minutes into the second half. Gueye opened the scoring with a header from Callum Brittain's cross in the 61st minute.

Eustace praised Gueye's performance, noting his initial disappointment at not starting. "Makhtar didn't need much persuasion to go on; he was pretty peed off [that] he wasn't starting and that's the reaction I want," Eustace added. He highlighted Gueye's growing confidence and impact on the game, suggesting that leaving him out might inspire similar performances in future matches.
Blackburn's second goal came in the 71st minute from Brittain, shortly after a controversial moment where Portsmouth's Callum Lang was brought down by goalkeeper Aynsley Pears. Despite this incident, Blackburn capitalised on their momentum and scored again. "It could've quite easily been a penalty, for sure," admitted Eustace regarding the non-awarded penalty.
The third goal sealed Blackburn's victory when Andreas Weimann scored from a rebound after a Gueye shot five minutes later. This decisive goal ensured all three points for Blackburn as they continued their push for promotion.
Eustace acknowledged their fortune in avoiding a penalty decision but felt his team deserved the win overall. "We reacted though and scored a great goal and killed it off," he said. On the other hand, Portsmouth manager John Mousinho expressed frustration over refereeing decisions, stating, "We don't need VAR in the Championship; referees just have to be better."
The result leaves Blackburn optimistic about their play-off chances while Portsmouth faces an uphill battle to climb out of relegation danger. Both teams will look to build on this match as they continue their respective campaigns.
