BlueCo Recruitment Questions After Strasbourg January Transfers Weakened Squad
Gary O'Neill puts Strasbourg's slip in form down to decisions made by BlueCo during the January transfer window, arguing the squad actually lost strength and that missed recruitment chances have hurt both league ambitions and runs in Europe and domestic cup competition.
Since replacing Liam Rosenior at the start of 2026, Gary O'Neill has overseen 15 Ligue 1 matches, recording six wins, five draws and four defeats, giving a 40% win rate, yet Strasbourg remain eighth and are already out of the European qualification race.

O'Neill is frustrated that winter business, controlled by BlueCo, the ownership group for both Chelsea and Strasbourg, did not match stated ambitions, suggesting the club needed reinforcements but instead lost key options and reduced overall depth at a crucial stage.
BlueCo oversaw several moves between Chelsea and Strasbourg, with David Datro Fofana and Aaron Anselmino arriving on loan from Stamford Bridge, while Gessime Yassine joined permanently from USL Dunkerque for a reported £7m fee, reshaping the squad midway through the campaign.
The same ownership structure also triggered exits, as Mamadou Sarr, who had played an important role under Rosenior during the first half of the season, was recalled by Chelsea, weakening Strasbourg's defence just as the fixture list grew more demanding.
Ecuador international Kendry Paez saw a season-long loan with Strasbourg cut short by Chelsea, with the midfielder immediately sent to River Plate instead, removing another option from O'Neill's rotation and limiting flexibility across attacking and creative positions.
{TABLE_1}| Player | From | To | Move type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| David Datro Fofana | Chelsea | Strasbourg | Loan | Joined January 2026 |
| Aaron Anselmino | Chelsea | Strasbourg | Loan | Joined January 2026 |
| Gessime Yassine | USL Dunkerque | Strasbourg | Permanent | Reported £7m fee |
| Mamadou Sarr | Strasbourg | Chelsea | Recall | Influential under Rosenior |
| Kendry Paez | Strasbourg | River Plate | Loan change | Season loan cut short |
Reflecting on the squad's shape and what is needed next, O'Neill outlined concerns about recruitment and structure, stressing the need for more quality and depth if Strasbourg are to progress and match the competitive aims set under the current ownership.
"I need two centre-forwards,said O'Neil, asreported by L'Equipe. The owners want to give me the means to perform next season, but we have to improve the culture around the club, the quality of the players, and the depth of the squad. We messed up in the January transfer window. We weakened instead of improving the squad."
On the pitch, Strasbourg's limitations have shown most clearly in knockout football, with the team losing 2-0 on aggregate to Rayo Vallecano in the Europa Conference League semi-finals and suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Nice in the Coupe de France semi-finals.
With Strasbourg stuck in eighth place in Ligue 1 and already certain to miss out on European qualification, O'Neill views the January transfer window as a missed chance to strengthen a promising first half of the season and believes better planning will be vital for 2026-27.
