Bodo/Glimt produced another shock in the Champions League league phase, beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to reach the play-off round. Fredrik Sjovold cancelled out Alexander Sorloth’s early header, before Kasper Hogh struck near the hour. The result sends the Norwegian club into a play-off tie against either Real Madrid or Inter.
The defeat does not stop Atletico Madrid progressing, with Diego Simeone’s side finishing 14th in the league phase standings. That position leaves Atletico due to face either Club Brugge or Galatasaray in the play-off round. Bodo/Glimt end the phase in 23rd, just inside the qualification spots after a tense final matchday.

The opening period saw Atletico Madrid believe they had gone ahead twice before Sorloth’s goal finally counted. Alex Baena finished smartly but VAR ruled the effort out for offside. Julian Alvarez then scored directly from a corner, only for the referee to order a retake, giving Bodo/Glimt another escape during a frantic spell.
Atletico Madrid did break through in the 15th minute when Sorloth met David Hancko’s cross with a powerful header. The Norwegian forward rose above the defence and gave Jan Oblak’s opposite number no chance. That strike briefly seemed to settle the hosts, who controlled possession while Bodo/Glimt tried to regroup after the setback.
Bodo/Glimt responded well and equalised before half-time through an incisive move down the right. Fredrik Bjorkan picked out Sjovold with a precise pass in behind Atletico’s back line. Sjovold drove into the area and drilled a low shot beyond Jan Oblak, bringing the visitors level and shifting the atmosphere inside the stadium.
The second half opened with Atletico chasing a fresh lead, but crucial chances went begging. Alvarez squandered a clear opening from close range, failing to test the goalkeeper. Pablo Barrios then struck the crossbar with a fierce effort. Those misses proved costly when Hogh forced the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble.
Bodo/Glimt’s victory followed a home win against Manchester City the previous week, creating a notable double. Head coach Kjetil Knutsen became just the sixth manager to claim Champions League wins over both Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone. The others are Jurgen Klopp, Carlo Ancelotti, Luis Enrique, Thomas Tuchel and Bruno Genesio.
The Norwegian side also achieved a historical marker for their country. Bodo/Glimt are the first club from Norway to advance from a Champions League group or league phase since Rosenborg in the 1996-97 season, when Rosenborg reached the quarter-finals. That comparison underlines the scale of Bodo/Glimt’s progress in this campaign.
Hogh’s goal continued a sharp improvement in finishing at this level. The forward has now converted three of the last six shots on target in the competition, scoring twice against Manchester City and once against Atletico. Earlier in the season, Hogh failed to find the net with the first 16 shots attempted, including two penalties.
There were notable personal milestones for Atletico Madrid despite the defeat. Sorloth became the first Norwegian player to score a European Cup or Champions League goal against a Norwegian club. Koke made a 110th Champions League appearance under Simeone, the third-highest total for one manager-player pairing, behind Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes under Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
