Bologna Part Ways With Vincenzo Italiano Following Mutual Agreement

Bologna have confirmed that head coach Vincenzo Italiano is leaving by mutual consent, ending a two-year spell marked by a long-awaited trophy and steady league progress. The agreement closes a chapter that began in 2024 and delivered a Coppa Italia title, improved Serie A finishes and deep runs in Europe, before Italiano decided the cycle had run its course.

Italiano informed the club that he believes his time at Bologna has come to an end after two seasons marked by excellent results, regardless of any future professional opportunities. Bologna FC 1909 extends its best wishes to Italiano and his staff for the next chapter of their careers.

Bologna part ways with Italiano

Italiano’s standout achievement with Bologna came on 14 May 2025, when the team beat Milan 1-0 in the 2024-25 Coppa Italia final. That victory ended a 51-year wait for a major trophy and secured a landmark success for Bologna FC 1909. Under Italiano, Bologna also reached the quarter-finals of both the Coppa Italia and the Europa League in the 2025-26 campaign.

Across Serie A, Bologna’s performances under Vincenzo Italiano showed gradual improvement. The side finished ninth in 2024-25, then climbed one place to eighth in 2025-26. However, the second season also brought a setback in the Supercoppa Italiana, where Bologna lost the final to Napoli, missing a chance to add another trophy.

Before joining Bologna in 2024, Vincenzo Italiano spent two seasons in charge of Fiorentina. During that spell, Fiorentina lost three major finals, falling short twice in the Europa Conference League and once in the Coppa Italia. At Bologna, Italiano therefore achieved what had eluded that Fiorentina side, by finally lifting a domestic cup.

Italiano has already been widely linked with the vacant Napoli position after Antonio Conte left following two seasons in charge. Reports in Italy also name Massimiliano Allegri as a contender for the same role after Allegri was dismissed by AC Milan. Bologna’s announcement did not comment on any prospective move for Italiano.

Bologna and Vincenzo Italiano: official club statement and appreciation

A club statement read: Bologna FC 1909 announces that a mutual agreement has been reached with Vincenzo Italiano to terminate his contract. The club would like to thank Vincenzo for the passion and dedication with which he carried out his work over these years, which will remain part of the club's history, not least for the Coppa Italia triumph on May 14, 2025.

The mutual parting leaves Bologna searching for a new head coach after two productive seasons. Italiano departs with a major trophy, improved league performance and European quarter-finals on his record, while Napoli and other clubs assess coaching options following recent changes involving Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri in Serie A.
