Sonia Bompastor Aims To Balance New Coaching Philosophy With Emma Hayes' Legacy At Chelsea

Sonia Bompastor reflects on her new role at Chelsea, aiming to honour Emma Hayes' legacy while implementing her own coaching philosophy. She acknowledges the challenges ahead but is confident in her team's adaptability.

Sonia Bompastor is embracing comparisons to Emma Hayes as she aims to establish her own legacy at Chelsea. Hayes left the club after securing a fifth consecutive Women's Super League title, marking her seventh overall in a successful 12-year tenure. Bompastor took over in May and started her WSL journey with a narrow 1-0 win against Aston Villa last weekend.

It was Chelsea's first home game without Hayes since July 2012. Bompastor expressed her eagerness to build on the foundation laid by her predecessor. "It's normal for people to compare because she had such great success here," Bompastor told Sky Sports. "I'm really thankful to Emma for the legacy she left me."

Bompastor Balances New Ideas with Hayes' Legacy

Bompastor appreciates the qualities Hayes brought to the team and is comfortable with the comparisons. "If I can have the same success as she had at Chelsea, I will be the first person to be happy about that," she said. Despite this, Bompastor is keen to introduce her own ideas and personality to the club.

She aims to strike a balance between continuing Hayes' legacy and implementing her own philosophy and vision. "Yes, some things maybe will be the same and some of those will be different," Bompastor added, highlighting her approach.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd scored the first goal under Bompastor's leadership, but Chelsea's performance was not entirely convincing. Both teams had 13 shots, but Chelsea had fewer on target than Villa (four compared to five). The team also had slightly less possession at 47.4%.

Bompastor acknowledged that adapting to her style presents challenges but remains optimistic about future improvements. "I'm very happy with the way the players are adapting," she noted. She understands that time is limited at this level, yet believes in achieving results from start to finish.

Looking Ahead

The players are adjusting well and are eager to learn despite being early in the season. "We still have work to be done," Bompastor admitted, recognising that they are not yet where they want to be but are close.

Chelsea's next challenge is against WSL newcomers Crystal Palace in their first away match of the campaign on Friday. This fixture offers another opportunity for Bompastor's side to refine their approach and continue their progress under new leadership.
