Bompastor Emphasises Player Protection Following Chelsea's Frustrating Draw Against West Ham

Sonia Bompastor voiced her frustration after Chelsea's late draw with West Ham in the Women's Super League, highlighting the need for player protection and performance improvement.

Sonia Bompastor expressed her frustration after Chelsea conceded a late equaliser against West Ham United in the Women's Super League. Despite Maika Hamano and Aggie Beever-Jones giving Chelsea an early lead, Shekiera Martinez's goals for West Ham resulted in a draw. This marked the first time in 90 WSL matches that Chelsea failed to win after leading by more than one goal.

Bompastor made significant changes to the team that had recently staged a remarkable Champions League comeback against Manchester City. She explained her decision to make seven alterations before the match, emphasising player welfare. "I don't have any regrets," she stated, highlighting the importance of balancing winning with player health.

Bompastor Stresses Player Care After Draw

After four intense matches with Manchester City, Bompastor prioritised her players' well-being against West Ham. Captain Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert were substituted at half-time to manage their workload. Bompastor noted that Bright had played every minute of recent games, and it was crucial to protect her from exhaustion.

The Chelsea manager reflected on the game, acknowledging missed opportunities in the first half. "We created many chances," she said, suggesting that converting those could have secured victory early on. However, a lapse in intensity allowed West Ham to capitalise and level the score.

Bompastor also pointed out the challenges of playing with a quick turnaround after an emotionally charged match on Thursday. The mental and physical demands on players were significant, affecting their performance against West Ham. Despite these challenges, Bompastor remained focused on maintaining player health alongside competitive success.

The draw meant Chelsea dropped points at home for the first time this season in the league. Bompastor acknowledged that while disappointing, it was essential to consider long-term goals and player safety over immediate results.
