Aitana Bonmati's Extra-Time Goal Leads Spain To First Euros Final Against England

Aitana Bonmati scored in extra time to secure Spain's first European Championship final appearance with a 1-0 victory over Germany. The match showcased intense competition and key saves from both teams.

Aitana Bonmati's decisive goal in extra time propelled Spain into their first European Championship final, defeating Germany 1-0 in Zurich. Bonmati's strike from a tight angle on the right byline caught Ann-Katrin Berger off guard after 113 minutes of intense play. Despite Germany's close attempts to score before full-time, Montse Tome's team will face England in the final, echoing the 2023 World Cup showdown.

Germany posed early challenges for the world champions with swift counterattacks. Klara Buhl narrowly missed with a left-footed shot, and Giovanna Hoffmann failed to connect with Jule Brand's cross. However, Spain had better opportunities, as Berger tipped Esther Gonzalez's volley over and later blocked another attempt from her.

Spain Advances to Euros Final After Bonmati's Goal

Spain intensified their efforts in the second half. Aitana Bonmati and Salma Paralluelo were unable to convert promising crosses. Meanwhile, Germany nearly seized victory late on. Buhl's 25-yard free-kick just missed the bottom-right corner. Cata Coll then made a crucial double save in the 94th minute, stopping Buhl’s deflected shot and smothering Carlotta Wamser’s follow-up.

Opportunities were scarce during extra time until Bonmati, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, made her mark. She skillfully maneuvered past Rebecca Knaak to receive Athenea del Castillo’s pass and delivered a low shot between Berger and the near post, securing Spain’s spot in the final.

This match marked the third encounter between Spain and Germany at major tournaments like the World Cup and Euros. Previously, La Roja had not scored against Germany in these events. Bonmati’s goal ended this streak and broke Berger’s formidable defense.

Berger was outstanding throughout Euro 2025, making 23 saves—six more than any other goalkeeper. Before being beaten at her near post by Bonmati’s strike, she had successfully stopped 15 consecutive shots on target. This performance underscores why no player has scored more knockout-stage goals for Spain at major tournaments than Bonmati, who is now tied with Jennifer Hermoso with three goals.
