Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Stuttgart on Saturday, marking Niko Kovac's debut as their coach. This loss further distanced them from the Bundesliga's top four. Kovac, who led Bayern Munich to a Bundesliga title in 2018-19, took over after Nuri Sahin was dismissed following four consecutive losses across all competitions.
Stuttgart gained the lead in the 50th minute when Waldemar Anton, a former player of theirs now with Dortmund, accidentally scored an own goal. Jeff Chabot then extended Stuttgart's advantage with a header shortly after the hour mark. Despite dominating possession in the second half, Dortmund struggled to convert their chances into goals.

Dortmund managed to reduce the deficit when Julian Brandt scored from a tight angle in the 81st minute. However, their hopes for an equaliser were dashed when Julian Ryerson received a red card for two bookable offences just before full-time. This setback leaves Dortmund in 11th place with 29 points, trailing fourth-placed Stuttgart by six points.
Dortmund's recent home form has been disappointing, with no wins in their last five Bundesliga matches at Signal Iduna Park. This includes three draws and two losses, marking their worst home run since autumn 2006 under Bert van Marwijk. That season ended with them finishing ninth in the league standings.
Stuttgart's victory marks their fifth consecutive win against Dortmund, matching their total victories from the previous 29 encounters between the two teams. This streak is Stuttgart's best against Dortmund since the Bundesliga began in 1963 and represents Dortmund’s longest ongoing losing streak against any current top-flight team.
Looking ahead, Dortmund will face Sporting in an upcoming European play-off match. They will need to regroup quickly to improve their standing both domestically and internationally.
