Borussia Dortmund staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the Bundesliga, keeping their Champions League aspirations alive. Despite initially trailing, Dortmund's victory marked their sixth win in seven league matches, elevating them from 11th to fifth place. They are now just one point shy of fourth-placed Freiburg.
Leverkusen began strongly, with Jeremie Frimpong scoring in the 30th minute during Xabi Alonso's last home game as manager. Alonso announced his departure at the season's end after leading the team to a domestic double and a Europa League final since joining in October 2022. Gregor Kobel's crucial saves kept Dortmund competitive in the first half.

Dortmund quickly responded to Leverkusen's lead. Julian Brandt equalised three minutes later from a Karim Adeyemi assist. Before halftime, Julian Ryerson scored again for Dortmund after they regained possession in Leverkusen's half. Amine Adli nearly scored for Leverkusen but hit the woodwork just before the break.
In the second half, Leverkusen struggled to create significant chances. Their lacklustre performance led to another loss of possession in the 73rd minute. Marcel Sabitzer set up Brandt, who assisted Adeyemi for Dortmund's third goal. Shortly after, Serhou Guirassy scored his 20th league goal of the season, extending Dortmund's lead further.
Jonas Hofmann managed to score for Leverkusen in stoppage time with a header that hit the woodwork before going in. However, it was insufficient to change the outcome of the match.
Under Niko Kovac, Dortmund has experienced a resurgence this year, making them contenders for Europe's elite competition once more. They are unbeaten in their last seven Bundesliga games (six wins and one draw), including four consecutive victories—both club records for this season.
Serhou Guirassy has been instrumental in Dortmund's success. He has scored 63 goals in his first 100 Bundesliga appearances, second only to Roy Makaay among non-German players who netted more (64). This season alone, Guirassy has scored 20 goals, with only Harry Kane surpassing him with 25 goals.
Dortmund will face relegated Holstein Kiel next week as they continue their pursuit of a Champions League spot. Their fate remains uncertain but promising given their current form and position on the table.
