Borussia Dortmund Must Rely On More Than Mentality To Defeat Real Madrid, Says Nuri Sahin

Nuri Sahin insists Borussia Dortmund must bring quality and confidence alongside mentality to challenge Real Madrid in the Champions League. He acknowledges the difficulty of the task ahead.

Borussia Dortmund's head coach, Nuri Sahin, emphasises that a strong mentality alone won't suffice when facing Real Madrid. The team needs everything to tackle the challenge on Tuesday. Real Madrid secured their 15th European Cup in June at Wembley, defeating Dortmund 2-0 with late goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior. Sahin acknowledges the formidable task ahead in the Spanish capital.

In a press conference before the Champions League match, Sahin stated, "Mentality only is not enough to survive against Real Madrid, especially in this stadium, against the champions of this competition." He stressed the need for quality, confidence, and a bit of luck. "The game has to go our way," he added, highlighting that mentality alone won't secure victory.

Dortmund Needs More Than Mentality Against Madrid

Dortmund has started their Champions League campaign strongly. They thrashed Celtic 7-1 at home after a 3-0 win against Club Brugge. This impressive start places them at the top of the revamped standings with six points and a goal difference of nine. Sahin believes teamwork is crucial for maintaining this momentum against Real Madrid.

"It's only possible [to continue this way] as a collective against this team," Sahin mentioned. He expressed confidence in his players' understanding of their strategy and their bravery to build on recent successes in Europe. His experience as both player and coach adds depth to his approach.

Sahin's visit to Bernabeu holds personal significance as it's his first time there as a coach since taking over last summer. Previously an assistant manager under Edin Terzic, Sahin cherishes his connection with both clubs. "Being back means a lot to me because it was always my dream to play one day for Real Madrid," he shared.

Reflecting on his time at Real Madrid, Sahin remarked on its lasting impact despite not playing long there. "Even if it was not that long that I played for Real Madrid, it will always remain special for me," he said. His son was born in Madrid, adding personal joy to his return.

Sahin's journey from player to coach is marked by significant milestones. Leading Dortmund against Real Madrid combines professional ambition with personal dreams fulfilled. As they prepare for Tuesday's match, Sahin aims to inspire his team with both tactical insight and heartfelt motivation.
