Bournemouth Secures FA Cup Quarter-Final Spot With Penalty Shoot-Out Victory Over Wolves

Bournemouth reached the FA Cup quarter-finals after defeating Wolves in a penalty shoot-out. Despite a late equaliser from Matheus Cunha, Wolves fell short as Bournemouth capitalised on missed penalties.

Bournemouth secured a spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals after a tense penalty shoot-out against Wolves. Matt Doherty's missed penalty proved crucial for Wolves, as Luis Sinisterra's successful shot sent Bournemouth through. The match saw Matheus Cunha equalise with a remarkable long-range goal, cancelling out Evanilson's earlier strike. However, Cunha was later sent off for violent conduct, leaving Wolves at a disadvantage during the penalties.

Jorgen Strand Larsen nearly scored for Wolves before Bournemouth took the lead. Evanilson capitalised on Sam Johnstone's parry from Antoine Semenyo’s attempt to score. Bournemouth thought they had doubled their lead shortly after, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call involving Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen. A lengthy VAR check confirmed the decision, as new semi-automated offside technology malfunctioned.

Bournemouth Wins FA Cup Shoot-Out Against Wolves

Alex Scott missed an opportunity to extend Bournemouth's lead when penalised for handball instead of scoring. This allowed Cunha to level the score with a stunning 30-yard shot into the top-right corner. Despite Bournemouth's relentless attacks, Wolves held on until penalties, even though Cunha’s red card left them without their best penalty taker.

During the shoot-out, Sam Johnstone saved Dean Huijsen’s attempt, giving Wolves hope. However, Doherty missed his chance by sending his shot wide, and Boubacar Traore hit the crossbar. This opened the door for Sinisterra to secure Bournemouth’s victory and their third-ever quarter-final appearance in this competition.

Wolves' defeat marked their seventh loss in eight shoot-outs, while Bournemouth celebrated their fifth consecutive shoot-out win across all competitions. This victory means Bournemouth has reached the FA Cup quarter-finals twice in five years, having only done so once in 89 previous attempts.

Bournemouth dominated with 31 shots during the match, setting a record for an all-Premier League FA Cup tie since Manchester United's 36 shots against Norwich City in June 2020. Despite coming close to victory, Wolves must now cope without Cunha due to his suspension following his red card incident.

The match was filled with drama and pivotal moments that kept fans on edge throughout. Despite Wolves' efforts and near success, they were unable to overcome Bournemouth's determination and resilience in this thrilling encounter.
