Bournemouth Coach Iraola Frustrated By Familiar Errors As Winless Run Continues

Bournemouth dropped more Premier League points late on as a 1-1 draw with Burnley extended a winless run to eight matches, with Armando Broja’s stoppage-time header cancelling out Antoine Semenyo’s opener and denying Andoni Iraola a first league victory since late October.

The result extended contrasting sequences for both clubs, with Bournemouth continuing a difficult spell despite leading from the 67th minute, while Burnley halted a seven-game losing streak in the top-flight, the club’s worst run at this level for 121 years.

Iraola felt Bournemouth again let control slip in key moments, pointing to missed opportunities to extend their lead and a recurring weakness from dead-ball situations, after four of the team’s last six goals conceded arrived after the 75th minute of matches.

Reflecting on the pattern, Iraola told BBC Sport: "We were feeling like we were having the best chances, but we didn’t kill it. We are conceding a lot of set plays and it is a big punishment for us. We deserved to win. We should be 2-0 up so if something like this happens it is just 2-1. We didn’t kill the game in the moments we were playing better. This is the Premier League and you cannot have these mistakes defensively and offensively."

Semenyo’s goal underlined the forward’s status in the Bournemouth squad, taking the player to 28 league strikes for the club, a total bettered only by Joshua King with 48 and Callum Wilson with 41, as speculation continues linking Semenyo with a move before the January transfer window.

Iraola stressed that value, saying: "He is a massive player for us. That is not a big secret." The Cherries also created further chances after Semenyo’s breakthrough, but could not find a second goal that might have protected them against the late Burnley response.

Scott Parker viewed the draw as an important psychological step for Burnley, who avoided an eighth successive league defeat, and the manager spoke openly about the pressure on the squad during a difficult Premier League campaign and the need to embrace a survival battle.

Parker said: "There is no denying there was massive pressure on us down to the run we had been on, said Parker. We needed to stop that, really, so a massive result for us. We are in a fight, I am in a fight, these players are in a fight, and we will be in a fight for the rest of this season. When you are in a fight, you need certain ingredients, and we had that today."

Broja’s header ended a sequence of 39 club appearances without a goal, stretching back to October 2023 when the forward last scored for Chelsea, and Parker now hopes that this first Premier League strike for Burnley can change the momentum of Broja’s season.

Discussing the forward, Parker added: "Forwards always base their games on goals. Full credit to Armando, he gets the goal, and that is massive for him, and hopefully that is a springboard for him to keep moving in the right direction, which he is doing."
