Bournemouth Clinch Europa League Qualification As Andoni Iraola Bids Emotional Farewell

Bournemouth confirmed a place in next season's Europa League after a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, rounding off an 18-game unbeaten league run and securing sixth spot, while departing head coach Andoni Iraola described the farewell at the Vitality Stadium club as emotional and said the occasion almost brought tears.

The south-coast side finished the Premier League season with eight wins and ten draws across that long streak, setting up European qualification and recording 18 stalemates overall, while sixth position would have meant Champions League football in 2026-27 if Europa League winners Aston Villa had not beaten Manchester City to claim fourth.

The match at the City Ground followed a tense pattern, as Morgan Gibbs-White, who recently missed selection for England's World Cup squad, scored for Forest in the first half, before Marcus Tavernier levelled nine minutes after half-time, a goal that protected Bournemouth's unbeaten sequence and locked in yet another draw.

Bournemouth's campaign mixed resilience with consistency, reflected in the club recording the highest number of draws ever registered by a side in a 38-game Premier League season, while the late surge into sixth ensured European football and meant Iraola ended a three-year spell with the Cherries on a positive competitive note.

Team Competition Key 2025-26 Stats
Bournemouth Premier League 18-game unbeaten run (W8 D10), 18 draws, finished 6th
Nottingham Forest Premier League & Europa League Unbeaten when scoring first (P11 W8 D3), Europa League semi-finalists

Iraola reflected on the farewell with supporters and the group of players, explaining how strong the emotions felt after such a sustained effort and a successful push into Europe during the final months of the league season with Bournemouth, who now re-enter continental competition after this consistent domestic campaign.

"I am feeling so happy right now, so, so happy. Now that everything is done is when you start to think, and I become a little bit more emotional. I enjoyed the last moments, the celebrations with the supporters. I am quite hard, but I have been really close to tears. I cannot ask for much more. I have been so lucky to be in this moment with this group at players with this club. I think it is the perfect ending, and I am so thankful."

Iraola has not yet announced the next step in a coaching career that previously took in LaLiga and now a successful period in England, but stressed that decisions about where to work next season will depend on personal feelings and the sense of connection with any future squad and club.

"Now is going to be the time to take decisions. I didn't want to focus on other things before the season ended," Iraola said, before underlining how important guiding Bournemouth into Europe had been. "For me, it was massive to get this team in Europe. Now I will have to take decisions and I suppose it will not take long. It is a matter of feeling, feeling the team, the players, the correct place, more than if it is a bigger club. Sometimes they are not rational decisions, you don't know why, but you see it clearly. I don't really know what I am going to do. I know there are some options, but it is time now to recover a little bit, think with my family and let's see where the future is."

Forest's draw against Bournemouth capped a season of contrasting storylines, as Vitor Pereira arrived mid-campaign to stabilise a side threatened by relegation, guided the club away from the drop zone and also took the Tricky Trees to the Europa League semi-finals, where eventual winners Aston Villa ended the run.

The City Ground team showed a strong record when taking the lead in league fixtures, joining Manchester United and Sunderland as one of only three Premier League sides in 2025-26 to avoid defeat after scoring first, with Forest's tally standing at eleven such matches, eight of them wins and three draws.

Pereira assessed a demanding year that involved balancing a survival battle and European progress, suggesting that extra preparation time before the new campaign should help Nottingham Forest strengthen the squad and develop further, after the club proved capable of competing domestically and in the Europa League knockouts.

"Next season we will have more time," Pereira said. "I believe we can build something stronger. This season was very, very tight in terms of the battle for relegation. We did well, we competed, we went to the semi-final [Europa League]. It is not easy with the two competitions, struggling in one and trying to move forward in another. I believe that next season we can go and do good things."

The final-day draw therefore left both clubs with reasons for optimism, as Bournemouth look forward to Europa League football after a record-breaking sequence of draws and an extended unbeaten run, while Nottingham Forest anticipate a more settled season under Pereira following survival and a deep continental campaign.
