Brazil Beat Scotland 3-0 As Vinicius Brace Seals Top Spot In Group C
Brazil moved into the World Cup round of 32 and secured first place in Group C with a 3-0 victory over Scotland, as Vinicius Junior struck twice and Matheus Cunha added a third. The result in Miami kept Brazil ahead of Morocco, while Scotland must now wait to learn whether a third-place ranking is enough.
Vinicius Junior again delivered on the World Cup stage, scoring two goals and threatening a third, which was ruled out. The forward has become central to Brazil’s attacking output across the last two tournaments, and this performance strengthened Brazil’s position as one of the leading contenders heading into the knockout rounds.

Scotland began confidently in possession, yet Brazil’s intense press soon exposed defensive lapses. After seven minutes, Scott McKenna delayed on the ball, allowing Rayan to close in and steal possession. Rayan squared for Vinicius, who rounded Angus Gunn and finished into an empty net to give Carlo Ancelotti’s side an early lead.
A second goal for Vinicius arrived shortly after, but that strike did not stand. Jack Hendry was robbed near the edge of the Scotland area by the 25-year-old, who finished, only for VAR to intervene. Replays showed Vinicius stepping across the defender, and the officials judged the contact as a foul, sparing Scotland.
As the first half moved on, Brazil pinned Scotland deep and created a series of chances. Lewis Ferguson cleared a close-range Matheus Cunha effort off the line, but Scotland’s resistance broke in stoppage time. Vinicius drifted free at the back post and headed in Bruno Guimaraes’ precise cross in the third added minute. Moments later, Gunn denied Rayan’s low curler.
Scotland started the second half by forcing Alisson into action, as Scott McTominay’s header from a cross went straight at the goalkeeper. Vinicius then pushed for a hat-trick but saw another effort smothered by Gunn. On the hour mark, Guimaraes picked out Cunha unselfishly, and Cunha calmly slid the ball past Gunn for Brazil’s third.
Scotland continued to attack despite the scoreline. Alisson had to tip Ferguson’s dangerous free-kick behind, then reacted quickly from the resulting corner to repel another McTominay header. Deep into stoppage time, a recycled corner led to a close-range poke from McTominay in the 95th minute, but Alisson gathered the ball and preserved the clean sheet.
Brazil vs Scotland World Cup: Vinicius Junior statistics and records
Brazil’s dominance, especially before half-time, was clear in the numbers. They attempted 11 shots in the first period, their highest pre-interval total in a World Cup match since the 2018 last-16 meeting with Mexico, when they also had 11. Overall, Brazil recorded 21 attempts in Miami, reflecting sustained pressure on Scotland’s defence.
A closer look at expected goals underlined that superiority. Brazil produced 4.46 expected goals from those 21 efforts, compared with Scotland’s 1.13 from 14 shots. Scotland created plenty of efforts but from less favourable positions. Brazil, by contrast, regularly carved out high-quality openings through quick transitions and well-timed runs, with Vinicius often at the heart.
Three of Vinicius’ five World Cup goals have now been the opening strikes for the Selecao. Across the last two tournaments, Vinicius has been involved in eight of Brazil’s 15 goals, with five goals and three assists. Vinicius also became the fifth Brazilian to score in all three group matches at one World Cup finals.
That list includes Jairzinho in 1970, Romario in 1994 and both Ronaldo Nazario and Rivaldo in 2002. On each of those three earlier occasions, Brazil went on to lift the trophy. For a Brazil side guided by Carlo Ancelotti, such historical echoes will be noted, even if the current group remains focused only on the next opponent.
Bruno Guimaraes also produced a standout performance in midfield. Guimaraes supplied two assists in a single Brazil match for the first time and created three chances in total. Only Lucas Paqueta and Rayan fashioned more, each making four key passes. Guimaraes linked play, pressed energetically and supported attacks, giving Brazil control between both penalty areas.
Brazil vs Scotland World Cup: Vinicius Junior impact and Scotland outlook
Neymar’s long-awaited return arrived in the 76th minute, when Neymar came on as a substitute in a World Cup match for the first time. Neymar almost marked the comeback with an assist, sliding a pass through for Vinicius, but Gunn again reacted sharply to block. That stop meant Vinicius left without the match ball.
For Scotland, attention now shifts to the third-place standings, where goal difference may decide progress. The 3-0 scoreline harms that column, although Scotland showed ambition and pressed forward against elite opposition. Brazil, meanwhile, close Group C with a perfect result, move confidently into the round of 32, and will next test their form in the World Cup knockouts.
