Brazil Coach Carlo Ancelotti Praises India's Fighting Spirit, Highlights Defensive Challenges

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged India's defensive discipline and fighting spirit despite his team's comfortable 4-0 victory over the Blue Tigers in an international friendly at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday (October 3).

The five-time world champions eventually asserted their superiority, but Khalid Jamil's men managed to frustrate the visitors during the opening stages, drawing appreciation from one of football's most decorated managers.

Brazil Coach Carlo Ancelotti Praises India s Fighting Spirit Highlights Defensive Challenges

India, ranked 138th in the FIFA rankings, faced a daunting challenge against the South American giants. However, the hosts maintained a compact defensive structure for much of the opening half-hour, restricting Brazil's attacking combinations before Estêvão broke the deadlock in the 28th minute.

Speaking after the match, Ancelotti praised India's organisation and their willingness to launch counter-attacks despite the considerable difference in quality between the two teams.

"India played their part well. They tried to play their game; they defended, they were organised, they tried to play counter-attack. I think that they played a good game. We had difficulty opening the score, but the moment we opened the score with Estevão, we had more opportunity to control the game better," Ancelotti said.

Brazil doubled their advantage through Pedro in the 42nd minute before Samuel Lino struck twice in the second half to complete the emphatic victory.

Despite conceding four goals, India showed attacking intent after the interval. Ryan Williams tested Brazilian goalkeeper Pedro Morisco with a long-range effort, while Manvir Singh also forced a save from a difficult angle.

Ancelotti was pleased with the overall contest and appreciated the atmosphere created by more than 51,000 spectators at the Salt Lake Stadium.

"We feel good. It was a good experience. I think it was a good game, entertaining, with good intensity, and India did their part," the Italian tactician added.

The former Real Madrid manager also acknowledged that his side had room for improvement defensively, particularly against quick counter-attacks.

"I think we defended well. We could have defended better if we had a couple of chances in the counter-attack, but I think for us it's important not to concede a goal," he explained.

"Obviously we have to improve some mechanisms in defence, but we had a new defence that never played together, so maybe not everything was perfect."

The Kolkata encounter also provided Ancelotti with an opportunity to assess Brazil's emerging talents as he continues rebuilding the national team following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil concluded their three-match international window unbeaten, having previously played two friendlies against Australia.

For India, the defeat exposed the gulf in individual quality, but the performances against Panama and Brazil offered encouraging signs of progress under Khalid Jamil.

The Blue Tigers will now turn their attention to another challenging international friendly against Uruguay on October 6, hoping to build on the defensive organisation and attacking confidence displayed against Brazil.
