Brazil Overcomes Spain With A 4-2 Victory To Reach Olympic Football Final

In an exhilarating match at the Orange Velodrome, Brazil secured a place in the Olympic football final by defeating Spain 4-2. Despite Marta's absence, Brazil showcased their depth and teamwork, overcoming Spain's late rally to set up a final against the United States.

Brazil advanced to the Olympic Games final with a 4-2 win over Spain at the Orange Velodrome on Tuesday. Despite Salma Paralluelo scoring two late goals, Brazil's early dominance secured their victory. An own goal by Irena Paredes, along with strikes from Gabi Portilho, Adriana, and Kerolin, ended Spain's hopes for gold.

Spain aimed to become the first team to win Olympic gold after lifting the Women's World Cup but fell short. They had more shots than Brazil (26 to 17) and more on target (11 compared to seven). However, Brazil's expected goals (xG) of 3.27 and six big chances highlighted their control of the game.

Brazil Beats Spain 4-2 in Olympics

Brazil took the lead just six minutes into the match when Cata Coll's poor clearance hit Paredes and went into the net. Spain struggled to recover from this early setback. On the stroke of half-time, Portilho doubled Brazil's lead with a composed finish past Coll.

Adriana came off the bench in the 71st minute and made an immediate impact. She initially struck the bar but then headed in Portilho's nod-down from close range, making it 3-0 for Brazil. This goal seemed to spark some life into Spain.

Paralluelo managed to pull one back for Spain with a looping header that found the far post. Shortly after, Alexia Putellas hit the crossbar and forced Lorena into a smart save, showing Spain's determination to fight back.

However, Kerolin sealed Brazil's victory in stoppage time by sliding her shot through Coll's legs. Paralluelo scored her second goal in the 112th minute, but it was too late to change the outcome.

Marta’s Absence Felt

Brazil played without their legendary player Marta, who was serving a two-game ban. Despite her absence, her teammates ensured she would have a chance to compete for gold in what could be her final Olympics appearance.

The Brazilian team now looks forward to facing the United States in the final on Saturday. A third Olympic final appearance awaits them as they aim for glory at Paris 2024.

The match statistics reveal that while Spain had more attempts on goal, Brazil's efficiency and clinical finishing were decisive. The world champions were denied their dream of adding Olympic gold to their World Cup triumph due to Brazil’s superior performance.

This thrilling encounter showcased both teams' strengths but ultimately highlighted Brazil’s ability to capitalize on key moments. The upcoming final promises another exciting chapter in Olympic football history.
