Brazil's national football team has parted ways with head coach Dorival Junior after a disappointing 4-1 loss to Argentina in World Cup qualifying. The decision was made on Friday, leaving Brazil in fourth place in their group, having lost five out of 14 matches. Dorival, who took over in January 2024, managed 16 games, starting with a 1-0 victory against England at Wembley.
During his tenure, Dorival led Brazil to seven wins, six draws, and three losses. His team scored 27 goals and conceded 21. Despite these efforts, the heavy defeat to Argentina, who have already secured their spot for the 2026 World Cup, prompted the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to announce his departure.

The CBF expressed gratitude towards Dorival and wished him success in his future endeavours. They are now focused on finding a new coach. Brazilian media speculate that Al-Hilal's Jorge Jesus is a leading candidate for the position. Meanwhile, other reports indicate interest in Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti, who was previously considered before Dorival's appointment.
Dorival earned his role with Brazil following his achievements with Flamengo in 2022 when he won the Copa Libertadores. Although he never played for Brazil as a player, his coaching career has been notable. Despite his exit, Brazil remains well-positioned to qualify for the upcoming tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The CBF stated: "The Brazilian Football Confederation announces that coach Dorival Junior will no longer be in charge of the Brazilian National Team." They acknowledged his contributions and are actively seeking a successor to lead the team forward.
