Brazil vs Uruguay: Points Shared as Gerson Stunner Cancels Out Fede Valverde Strike in World Cup Qualifier

By MyKhel Staff

Brazil vs Uruguay: Gerson stunner helped Brazil rescue a point against Uruguay in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday (November 19) at the Arena Fonte Nova in Bahia, Brazil.

Gerson's brilliant strike cancelled out Federico Valverde's stunning opener for the visitors, but Dorival Júnior's side secured a second successive draw, having shared the spoils with Venezuela last week and continued their inconsistency in their qualifying campaign.

After a tightly contested first half, Real Madrid midfielder Valverde opened the scoring in the 55th minute when he curled a fine long-range low shot into the far corner.

Gerson, however, brought the hosts level seven minutes later as the Flamengo midfielder scored his first international goal with a terrific volley after a poor clearance by the Uruguayan defence.

Following the 1-1 draw, the five-time World Cup winners Brazil still remained in fifth in the CONMEBOL standings on 18 points, one point behind Colombia and Ecuador, after picking up its second straight draw.

Uruguay is second on 20 points, five behind leader Argentina, who got back to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory over Peru earlier on Tuesday (November 19). Uruguay and Brazil will next face Brazil in their qualifying campaign.

The next round of the qualifiers will take place in March 2025. Brazil will first face Colombia on March 20th before facing rivals Argentina on March 25th. Uruguay will host Argentina first before they travel to face Bolivia.

Also on Tuesday (November 19), 10-man Ecuador saw off Colombia 1-0 after Enner Valencia's strike in the seventh minute. Ecuador lost defender Piero Hincapié to a red card in the 34th minute but held on for the win.

Bolivia and Paraguay drew 2-2 in a match between teams that could end up fighting for the seventh position in the region's qualifying, which secures a berth in an international playoff. Chile, one of the worst performing teams in the region this year, showed some fighting spirit and beat Venezuela 4-2.
