Brentford Completes £18 Million Signing Of Caoimhin Kelleher After Selling Mark Flekken

Brentford has signed goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for £18 million following the sale of Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen. Director Phil Giles expressed confidence in Kelleher's abilities and character as he joins the squad on a five-year contract.

Brentford have secured Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool for £18 million following Mark Flekken's transfer to Bayer Leverkusen. On Tuesday, Brentford confirmed Flekken's permanent move to the Bundesliga after two seasons as their top goalkeeper. During his tenure, Flekken played in 37 of Brentford's 38 Premier League matches in the 2024-25 season, helping the team finish 10th, six places higher than the previous year.

Flekken achieved seven clean sheets and a save percentage of 72.17%. Among goalkeepers with over five Premier League appearances, only Chelsea's Robert Sanchez surpassed him with a save percentage of 73.23%. Brentford quickly announced Kelleher as Flekken's successor, revealing his five-year contract shortly after confirming Flekken's departure to Leverkusen.

Brentford Signs Kelleher After Flekken Sale

Phil Giles, Brentford's director of football, expressed his satisfaction with Kelleher's signing: "I am very pleased to welcome Caoimhin to Brentford. We have scouted him in the past and were aware that he had a year to go on his contract with Liverpool this summer. When Mark Flekken had the opportunity to move to Bayer Leverkusen, we immediately thought about Caoimhn as his replacement."

Kelleher has earned 21 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland and joined Liverpool’s academy from Ringmahon Rangers at age 17 in 2015. Last season, he made 10 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, stepping in when Alisson was injured. During these games, Liverpool achieved four clean sheets under Kelleher’s watch.

Kelleher recorded a save percentage of 67.57%, ranking him 12th among goalkeepers who played at least ten matches last season. He conceded 12 goals from an expected goals on target (xGoT) of 11.3, which means he allowed 0.7 more goals than expected based on shot quality faced during those games.

Giles further praised Kelleher’s character: "As well as being a very good goalkeeper, I've rarely met a player for whom everybody has such positive words to say about his personality and character. I'm therefore confident he'll be an excellent addition to the squad." This endorsement highlights not only Kelleher’s skills but also his potential impact on team dynamics.

The swift transition from Flekken to Kelleher demonstrates Brentford’s proactive approach in maintaining their squad strength. With Kelleher now part of the team, Brentford aims to build on their improved performance from last season and continue climbing the Premier League ranks.
