Brentford Finalises £27.5m Deal For Liverpool Midfielder Carvalho

Brentford have finalised the acquisition of Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool in a deal potentially reaching £27.5 million. The initial fee is £22.5 million, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder.

Carvalho had a standout season with Fulham, scoring 10 goals in 36 league matches during their 2021-22 Championship-winning campaign. He joined Liverpool for £5 million but struggled for playing time, making only 21 appearances and spending loan periods at RB Leipzig and Hull City.

Thomas Frank, Brentford's manager, expressed his excitement about the signing on the club's website: "Fabio is a player with a lot of qualities. He can play in all the front three or four positions in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. His best position is probably as a number 10 or coming in from the left."

Frank further elaborated on Carvalho's offensive skills: "Offensively, he has great abilities on the ball: he can go past players, slide a pass, create chances and get on the end of chances. He's a type of player that we don't have many of in the squad so he will add that something extra for us."

The young midfielder has signed a five-year contract with Brentford. As part of the agreement, Liverpool retains a 17.5% sell-on clause. This move marks Brentford's second major signing ahead of the 2024-25 season, following their £28 million purchase of Club Brugge forward Igor Thiago.

Carvalho initially represented England up to under-18 level before switching allegiance to Portugal to play for their under-21 side. His versatility and potential make him an exciting addition to Brentford's squad.
