Brentford have announced the signing of centre-back Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool for an initial fee of £20 million. Van den Berg, who joined Liverpool from PEC Zwolle at 17, never played in the Premier League for the Reds, making only four cup appearances.
In recent seasons, Van den Berg has been on loan to Preston North End, Schalke, and Mainz. Despite his potential, he was unlikely to break into Liverpool's first team with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarell Quansah ahead of him.

Earlier this month, Brentford also secured attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool. The club has now successfully signed Van den Berg, reportedly outbidding Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. The initial fee for the Dutchman is £20 million but could rise to £25 million. Additionally, Liverpool retains a 17.5% sell-on clause.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition on the club's website: "I think this is a great signing for the club and the team." He added that Van den Berg fits well with Brentford's playing style and culture.
"Sepp is a centre-back with a good level and he has the potential to develop even further," said Frank. "He fits our culture and the way we want to play: he is quick, he reads the game well and is composed on the ball in the build-up and in decisive defending actions."
Frank also praised Van den Berg's character: "Sepp is a great character, and I am convinced that he will fit in well with the group and help us to push forward."
Van den Berg might make his debut for Brentford against his former club Liverpool on Sunday. Brentford will visit Anfield for their second game of the Premier League season.
The addition of Van den Berg strengthens Brentford's defence as they aim to improve their standing in the Premier League this season. The club's strategic signings indicate their ambition to compete at higher levels.
