Brest Celebrates First European Win With 2-1 Triumph Over Sturm Graz In Champions League Opener

In their Champions League debut, Brest secured a historic 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz. Goals from Hugo Magnetti and Abdallah Sima led the French side to their first-ever win in European competition.

Brest achieved a historic milestone by defeating Sturm Graz 2-1, marking their first victory in European competition. Abdallah Sima's second-half goal was crucial for the French team, who were making their Champions League debut. Despite an own goal just before halftime, Brest managed to secure the win with goals in each half.

Hugo Magnetti opened the scoring for Brest in the 23rd minute. He controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed it into the bottom corner, marking Brest's first European goal. However, an own goal by Edimilson Fernandes allowed Sturm Graz to equalise just before halftime.

Brest Wins 2-1 Against Sturm Graz

After the break, Brest adopted a more aggressive strategy. This approach paid off when Sima scored in the 56th minute, skilfully evading his marker to restore Brest's lead. The visitors faced further challenges when Dimitri Lavalee received a second yellow card for a late tackle on Magnetti, reducing them to 10 men.

In the closing moments of the match, Jonas Martin had two opportunities to extend Brest's lead but was thwarted by Kjell Scherpen. This victory is significant as it is only the second time in 21 attempts that a debuting team has won in major European competition since Zrinjski Mostar's triumph last season.

Magnetti's performance was notable as he scored on his first start in European competition. His goal from outside the area made him the first player to achieve this feat in the Champions League since Demba Ba did so for Istanbul Basaksehir against Manchester United in November 2020.

This victory not only marks a significant achievement for Brest but also highlights their potential in European football. The team's performance against Sturm Graz sets a promising precedent for future competitions.
