Brighton Comes Back To Defeat Chelsea 2-1 In FA Cup Fourth Round Match

Brighton staged a comeback to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup fourth round. Kaoru Mitoma scored the decisive goal after Georginio Rutter equalised following an early own goal by Chelsea's goalkeeper.

Brighton staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Chelsea in the FA Cup at the Amex Stadium, with Kaoru Mitoma's decisive goal propelling them into the fifth round. This victory was a significant rebound for Fabian Hurzeler's squad after their 7-0 Premier League loss to Nottingham Forest. The win dashed Enzo Maresca's aspirations of securing a domestic cup in his debut season with Chelsea.

Chelsea initially took the lead under fortunate circumstances just five minutes into the match. Cole Palmer managed to create space and delivered a cross-shot from the left, which Verbruggen mishandled, resulting in an own goal. However, Brighton responded swiftly, equalising seven minutes later when Georginio Rutter headed Joel Veltman's precise cross into the bottom-left corner.

Brighton Triumphs Over Chelsea in FA Cup

Before half-time, Palmer squandered Chelsea's best opportunity to regain their lead. He sent a header onto the net's roof after Christopher Nkunku opted to pass instead of shooting. Brighton completed their comeback in the 57th minute when Mitoma skillfully controlled Rutter's delicate pass and nudged it past former Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

From that point on, Brighton remained largely untroubled. Chelsea's most promising chance to equalise came in the 74th minute but was missed by Palmer, who stretched unsuccessfully to reach it. This marked a rare setback for Chelsea in FA Cup fourth-round ties, having only failed to advance three times in their last 28 attempts.

Rutter has been enjoying a successful run in the FA Cup recently. He scored twice as Brighton triumphed over Norwich City 4-0 in the third round. With a goal and an assist against Chelsea, he now boasts six goal involvements (four goals and two assists) across his last three FA Cup appearances, despite playing only 176 minutes.

Chelsea's exit from this stage of the competition is unusual for them. They have previously been eliminated by Everton during the 2010-11 season and Bradford City in 2014-15. This defeat highlights Brighton's impressive performance and resilience throughout this year's tournament.
