Brighton Targets European Football After Impressive 3-0 Win Against Chelsea

Following a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea, Brighton is optimistic about qualifying for European football. Yankuba Minteh's standout performance highlights the team's resurgence after recent challenges.

Brighton's Yankuba Minteh expressed optimism about the team's European football aspirations following their decisive 3-0 victory over Chelsea. Minteh scored twice, complementing Kaoru Mitoma's stunning opener, propelling Brighton to eighth in the Premier League standings. This win marked Brighton's first home triumph in six league matches and their largest victory against a top-four team since defeating Arsenal 3-0 in May 2023.

Minteh was instrumental, achieving an expected goals (xG) total of 0.39, second only to Joel Veltman's 0.64. He led the match with three chances created and won 12 duels. This performance secured his first brace in English football, contributing to four goals in his last four league games. "I think the compactness of the team was good," Minteh told Sky Sports, highlighting the support he received from teammates.

Brighton Eyes Europe After Chelsea Triumph

Brighton's recent FA Cup victory over Chelsea helped them regain confidence after a heavy 7-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest. Manager Fabian Hurzeler praised his squad's resilience, emphasizing their character in overcoming a two-game losing streak. "I thought the 7-0 was crazy," Hurzeler remarked, stressing the importance of staying calm and focusing on basics to bounce back effectively.

Kaoru Mitoma's exquisite finish gave Brighton the lead in the 27th minute. He controlled Bart Verbruggen's long pass before curling it into the net, marking his third goal in five league appearances. Hurzeler commended Mitoma's skill and Verbruggen's assist: "It was a great touch and selection from Mitoma," he said, acknowledging Verbruggen's role despite a previous mistake.

Verbruggen became only the second Brighton goalkeeper to record an assist in the Premier League, following Jason Steele against Brentford in April 2023. This season has seen six assists by goalkeepers across the league, including Ederson (two), Mark Flekken, Jordan Pickford, Bernd Leno, and Verbruggen—the highest since eight assists were recorded in 2007-08.

Fabian Hurzeler emphasized making fans proud as a priority for Brighton. He maintained trust in his process despite setbacks: "The most important thing is that we make the Seagulls supporters proud." His approach remained consistent even after analyzing their previous defeat, showcasing faith in his players' ability to respond positively.

Brighton’s victory over Chelsea not only boosted their league position but also showcased their potential for European competition next season. The team's recent performances reflect their determination to achieve this goal while maintaining strong support from both management and fans alike.
