Brighton climbed into 10th place in the Premier League after a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, a result that also delivered back-to-back away wins in the top flight for the first time since the final two matches of the 2024-25 season, keeping European qualification hopes alive for the coming year.
The decisive moment came on 58 minutes when Yankuba Minteh’s miscued cross-shot somehow slipped inside Melker Ellborg’s near post, giving Brighton the lead despite Sunderland controlling long spells of the second half, as the hosts piled pressure on during the final half-hour but still could not find a route past a packed defence.

Minteh ended a long Premier League drought with that unusual finish, scoring only a second league goal of the season for Brighton and moving to 16 goal involvements in the competition since the start of last season, more than any other player aged 21 or under, with eight goals and eight assists recorded during that period.
Reflecting on Brighton’s position and the push for Europe, Minteh said: "It is difficult, but we are going to fight until the end. It can be good for us. We are getting back to our form while is really good for the team and I am really happy for everyone." Those comments underlined a belief that recent performances show clear improvement.
Sunderland thought they had gone ahead earlier when Chris Rigg finished a move, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a check, while Lewis Dunk made a crucial intervention in the first half, clearing Chemsdine Talbi’s volley from almost on the goal-line to keep Brighton level before Minteh’s decisive contribution after the interval.
Minteh admitted the goal owed much to fortune rather than design. "I wanted to cross the ball, but I just saw it in, so I took [the shot]," Minteh explained. "This is the strangest goal I have had since I started, but it is a good goal, and we take the three points and prepare for more. A difficult game, we know we have been having ups and downs. We have to keep going, happy for the performance of the team. Everyone gave100% and we got the win."
Sunderland’s home form has sharply declined after a strong start to the campaign that included 12 unbeaten matches at the Stadium of Light, with this defeat representing a third consecutive league loss on their own ground and contributing to a difficult 2026 run when compared with several other Premier League sides.

Only Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Tottenham have collected fewer Premier League points in 2026 than Sunderland’s 12 from a record of three wins, three draws and six defeats, and only Tottenham, with seven losses, have been beaten more often this calendar year, leaving Sunderland sliding down the table after early promise.
Attention after the match also centred on goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, who again replaced injured Robin Roefs. Head coach Regis Le Bris offered strong backing, stating: "He is doing well and stepping up in the Premier League. We are struggling a bit, so it gives opportunities for young lads. They need time and support, and it is important to feel the support. We need to help them rather than being negative. We quickly forget that last season we were in the Championship, we got promoted at the end. A young squad needs time, they need to struggle because you learn a lot in this time. We have another important fixture next week because we are excited by the event, and we are looking forward to it [derby game against Newcastle United]."
Brighton leave the Stadium of Light with three important points, renewed momentum in the Premier League and confidence about a European push, while Sunderland face a key derby against Newcastle United with a young squad still adjusting to top-flight demands and seeking to halt a poor recent sequence of domestic results.
