Brighton Performances Drive Focus As Hurzeler Shuns Table Talk After Chelsea Win

Brighton moved above Chelsea into the Premier League’s top six with a 3-0 home victory, yet Fabian Hurzeler stressed that league position matters less than maintaining performance levels. Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck rewarded a strong display at the American Express Stadium and lifted Brighton two points clear of Chelsea in the race for European qualification.

Asked about Brighton’s improved standing, Hurzeler downplayed talk of the table and stressed his side’s approach. He said: "It is not that important for us. We will just keep focusing on the performances and keep focusing on what we can do right. We have high expectations of ourselves. I always say focus on the process, because you will get the results you deserve if you focus on what you can control."

Brighton prioritises performances over table

Brighton controlled the contest against Chelsea from the start, limiting the visitors to minimal threat and creating regular chances. Brighton had 15 shots to Chelsea’s six and registered nine efforts on target, while Chelsea failed to test the Brighton goalkeeper once. The home side also led the expected goals numbers, reflecting the pressure created across the 90 minutes.

Those numbers underline why Brighton’s display stood out from a statistical view, not just visually. They won the xG battle by 2.17 to 0.38 and restricted Chelsea throughout. It was also the first Premier League match since February 2025 in which Chelsea produced no shots on target, with Brighton responsible for both 3-0 wins in that sequence.

The Opta supercomputer updated Brighton’s European prospects after the win and offered improved probabilities. Brighton now sit one place above Chelsea and have a 6.1% chance of Champions League qualification, compared with Chelsea’s 1.3%. Brighton’s prospects of reaching the Europa League stand at 34.2%, which is currently the highest probability among Premier League teams.

Hurzeler, however, avoided discussing specific targets for Europe despite the strengthened position. The coach maintained that performances must come first, with league outcomes following later. Brighton’s squad responded with a complete display against Chelsea, displaying organisation without the ball and composure in attack, which matched Hurzeler’s demand for a clear team identity during matches.

Brighton’s progress has been closely linked to the impact of younger players during recent seasons. Since the start of 2022-23, Brighton players aged 21 or younger have scored 59 Premier League goals. That figure is 20 more than any other club in that period, with Arsenal next on 39. Hinshelwood and Evan Ferguson have both contributed strongly to that record.

Hinshelwood is one of two Brighton players to reach double figures for league goals while 21 or younger in that time. Hinshelwood has scored 10, while Ferguson leads with 13. These contributions underline how Brighton rely heavily on younger players in key situations, including high-pressure fixtures such as this meeting with Chelsea in the Premier League.

Brighton’s dominance over Chelsea in recent seasons also gained further weight with this result. The Seagulls completed a second Premier League double over Chelsea, having also achieved that in 2022-23. They have now beaten Chelsea in three consecutive league games for the first time, strengthening confidence ahead of the final weeks of the campaign.

Hurzeler described how the display matched Brighton’s desired style across all phases, not just in attack. "It's definitely a positive feeling, Hurzeler continued. We played a good game, it is not just about the result but also what we brought on the pitchthe identity. We were there in every phase. It was not just parts of the game that looked good, but the entire performance. I am proud of the boys. Everyone has the intention to start well, but in particular tonight, it felt it was crucial to really show we wanted to win this game. We wanted to bring the fans behind us and build a connection and an atmosphere. You always need to bring this intensity on the pitch."

Attention now turns to Brighton’s remaining fixtures, with important points still available in the Premier League. Brighton visit out-of-form Newcastle United on 2 May, followed by matches against Wolves and Leeds United. The season closes with a meeting against Manchester United, where Brighton’s focus on performances, rather than the table, is set to continue.
