Brighton Eyes Europe After Draw With Tottenham As Rutter Shines Off Bench

Georginio Rutter stated Brighton will continue chasing European qualification after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham. Rutter struck a 95th-minute equaliser at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, after coming off the bench. The late goal preserved Brighton’s unbeaten away run and kept the team firmly in the Premier League race for European spots.

Rutter’s strike was Brighton’s 11th league goal by a substitute this season. No club has more in the Premier League, with Arsenal also on 11. Brighton are now unbeaten in four away league fixtures under Fabian Hurzeler, winning three and drawing one, extending a strong sequence on the road.

Brighton eye Europe after Spurs draw

The Seagulls sit one point behind seventh-place Brentford, who drew with Fulham earlier on Saturday. Brighton’s position could worsen if Everton defeat Liverpool and Sunderland overcome Aston Villa on Sunday. Even so, Brighton still view European qualification as realistic, with several league fixtures remaining to influence the table.

Brighton twice came from behind against Spurs in north London, showing consistent resilience. Tottenham led on two occasions, yet Brighton found responses each time. The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time, when Rutter converted to secure a 2-2 scoreline. That late goal triggered strong celebrations from the travelling Brighton support.

Brighton’s recent away sequence under Fabian Hurzeler compares with the club’s longest top-flight run on the road. The current four-game unbeaten stretch is close to a five-match sequence between December 2024 and January 2025. The club’s depth has also proven useful this season, as shown by the volume of goals scored by substitutes.

"The good thing is we came back. We took one point, better than nothing, Rutter told Sky Sports. We could give up and we didn't. We were pushing for the third goal as well, that shows big character. We try to take it game by game. We knew today would not be easy because they want to push to stay in the Premier League. We are in good shape, too, because we haven't lost for a long time. Maybe, at the end, one point is enough to go to Europe. We keep pushing. We think about it [Europe]. I think about it because we are close."

Rutter’s comments underlined Brighton’s belief and focus, stressing the value of mentality in tight Premier League contests. Brighton next host Champions League-chasing Chelsea at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday. That match could further shape the club’s European hopes, while extending an already strong run of recent league results.
